BOSTON MA - John Joseph Wovers, formerly of Waterbury, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 15, 2015, in Boston, Massachusetts at the age of 95. He was the husband of the late Agnes (Donnelly) Wovers who passed away in 2006.
John was born November 1, 1919 in Bristol, Connecticut, the son of the late Barbara (Barvedis) Wovers and James Wovers. Trained as a tool and diemaker, he worked in the manufacturing of clocks and watches for the E. Ingram Company and Timex Corporation. He was later employed by The Torrington Company from where he retired. A proud veteran of World War II, John served in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Lagrange in the South Pacific as Seaman First Class. He married Agnes Donnelly Wovers of Waterbury, Connecticut where they lived and celebrated 50 years of marriage. After Agnes's passing, John moved to Boston to be closer to his daughter, Nancy Wovers Cadène, son-in-law, Jean Martin Cadène, and granddaughter, Isabelle, with whom he spent many happy times. In Boston his favorite spot became Christopher Columbus Park on Boston Harbor where he enjoyed the beauty of the gardens and the sea. He had a life-long passion for sailing and the ocean which he happily passed along to his family. John was an avid reader and collector of many books, loved newspapers and journalism, photography, and telling a good story. He was a member of the VFW post 7330 in Oakville, Connecticut. Also surviving John is his niece Barbara Pierce of Rocky Hill, Connecticut as well as many other nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. His grace and good humor in his later years were to be admired and will be missed.
Funeral services for Mr. Wovers will be held on Thursday, March 19, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. from Eastside Memorial, "A Casey Family Funeral Home & Tribute Center 1987 East Main St Waterbury to SS Peter & Paul Church, 67 Southmayd Rd. Waterbury when a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Friends and relatives may visit with John's family on Thursday morning from 9:00 till 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, John's family suggests a donation to Courageous Sailing's Youth Program in the Charlestown Navy Yard, Boston, Massachusetts.
