WATERBURY - Mr. Jose J. Portelinha, 91, of Waterbury, passed away Tuesday, September 12, 2023 at Trinity Terraces in Watertown with his family by his side. He was the beloved husband of Cristina (Pinto) Portelinha of 64 years.
Jose was born in Teloes, Portugal on March 5, 1932, son of the late Antonio and Eulalia (Sousa) Portelinha and he was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church. He was a machine operator at Waterbury Buckle Company for many years before his retirement in 1994. Jose spent his early years centered around family, farming, marching band and the traditions of country life in Portugal, prior to immigrating to Waterbury CT. In a new country and new language, Jose raised four kids without outside help. He enjoyed building and fixing things, and was never afraid to tackle a big job like adding an addition to the house. He was always willing to help others with repairs or projects. He loved playing the saxophone, writing fado (rhymes), gardening, making wine, playing solitaire, and brain teasers. He loved Sunday lunches with family and most of all his faith in God which guided his life.
Besides his wife Cristina, he leaves behind three sons and one daughter and their families; Jose A. Portelinha and his wife Michelle from Woodbridge, grandchildren Dimitri, Joelle, Kiele, Jasmin, and Taylor; Emilia Portelinha of Wolcott; Antonio J. Portelinha and his wife Cindy from Watertown, grandchildren Tiago and Juilanna; Agostinho Portelinha of Waterbury. One sister; Natalia Portelinha of Teloes, Portugal. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one brother; Armindo Portelinha; three sisters Olivia Oliveira, Celina Portelinha, Maria Augusta Costa; three brother-in-law’s Agostinho Escaleira, Fernando Oliveira, Evaristo Pinto and one sister-in-law Libania Escaleira.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 16, 2023 at Our Lady of Fatima Church in Waterbury. Everyone is requested to meet directly at the Church. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Waterbury. There are no calling hours.
