WATERBURY CT Joseph B. Santopietro Jr. passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 16, 2015 at St. Mary's Hospital, surrounded by the love and comfort of his family. He was the husband of Marie (Palomba) Santopietro.
Joe was born on December 1, 1934 in Waterbury the son of the late Giuseppe and Adeline "Nellie" (Fabian) Santopietro. He was educated in local schools and proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. Joe had two nicknames; as a child "Nu-Nu Son of Nellie" and later in life "Big". He worked as a salesman for various companies and Anaconda American Brass and owned and operated Santopietro Realty and Santopietro ARCO. He was very involved in the family business, NVLM. Joe loved life and enjoyed participating in many activities and sports. He was an avid fan of the NY Giants, NY Yankees and the horses. He especially loved his family and was so very proud of all of them, especially his grandchildren. He always enjoyed spending time with Kyle, listening to Sabrina sing or watching Paige play basketball or listen to both of them in the church choir. He enjoyed spending the winters in Florida and was a proud parishioner of Our Lady of Mt Carmel Church. He was also a longtime member of the Waterbury Republican Town Committee and a past member of the Pontelandolfo and Avilenese Clubs. He served the City of Waterbury on the Zoning Board of Appeals and as a City Constable. Joe exercised routinely at the Post University Pool and visited with his friends daily at the Shell station and he read every line of at least three newspapers daily. As a sports enthusiast, he played football for a semi pro team in his youth and coached VFW basketball teams. He enjoyed vacationing with his wife and longtime friends. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered.
Besides his loving wife of 60 years, Marie, Joseph is survived by his sons, former Mayor Joseph J. Santopietro and his wife, Attorney Julie M. Porzio of Waterbury and Jeffery Santopietro and his wife, Maureen of Waterbury. He also leaves his grandchildren, Kyle, Sabrina and Paige, his sister-in-law, Vilma Palomba, his nieces, Debbie Wasson and Lori Cedela, and his aunt, Concetta Fabian as well as several cousins and great nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Sara (Santopietro) Berardi and his brothers-in-law, Pasquale Berardi and Nicholas Palomba. The family would like to acknowledge and thank Drs. Borkowski, Phatak, Strachan and Mancini as well as the staff at Glendale Nursing Center and St. Mary's Hospital for the love and care they shared with Joe during his illness.
Funeral services for Mr. Santopietro will be held on Thursday, August 20, 2015 at 8:30 a.m. from Eastside Memorial "A Casey Family Funeral Home & Tribute Center" 1987 East Main St @ Southmayd Rd., Waterbury to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 785 Highland Ave., Waterbury for a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Relatives and friends may visit with Joseph's family on Wednesday from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers and to honor Joseph's memory, donations may be made to The Joseph B.
