It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our brother, uncle and friend Joseph Edward DiCorpo. Joe, a prominent medical practitioner and specialist in anesthesiology and international medical transport for more than forty-five years, died at his home in the Atlanta suburbs.
Born on July 15, 1951 to the late Joseph and Olga Mary (Santavenere) DiCorpo in Waterbury Connecticut, Joe graduated from Fairfield College Preparatory School and Fairfield University (Connecticut) where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Chemistry. In 1973, he was among the first students admitted to what was the newly-constituted program at Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta, where in 1975 he obtained a Master of Medical Science in Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine. He held Board Certification in Anesthesiology and a license to practice from the Composite State Board of Medical Examiners.
Joe is survived by his brother John DiCorpo (Middlebury, Connecticut) who with his niece Cordelia Sheehan (Atlanta) cared for Joe in the final days of his life. He is also survived by two sisters, Margaret Sheehan-Jones (and her husband Larry Jones, Palm Coast, Florida) and Mary A. D. Petrino (widow of Jeffrey Peter Petrino, Alexandria, Virginia) as well as his niece Sarah DiCorpo (Denver, Colorado) and his nephew Christopher DiCorpo (Middlebury, Connecticut). In addition to his parents, his niece Julia Kenney Petrino of Alexandria, Virginia preceded him into life everlasting.
Joe loved all cars, but especially police cars. His hobby of restoring police cars was his passion and he won numerous awards for the beautiful and authentic cars he created over 50 years. Beyond his involvement with the several national car groups Joe’s professional life was marked by a deep commitment to public service. Serving as the chief medical consultant and director of transportation for Assist America in Atlanta, Joe dedicated himself to ensuring the well-being and safety of others. His journey in emergency medical services (EMS) began in 1971 as an EMT, leading to roles as an EMS chief and administrator in Ohio and California. He personally performed over five hundred Emergency Aero-Medical Evacuations and Repatriations and supervised many hundreds of others over the course of his long career. Joe’s impact extended far beyond his professional endeavors. He touched the lives of countless individuals with his kindness, generosity, and unwavering dedication to making a difference in the world. His compassion knew no bounds, and his willingness to lend a helping hand endeared him to all who had the privilege of knowing him. Joe fought a courageous battle with cancer for over 17 years while living his life to the fullest. He was an inspiration to us all. Donations in his name can be made to the American Cancer Society.
