WATERBURY - Joseph P. Murphy age 69 of Waterbury, passed away on Wednesday September 27, 2017 at Saint Mary's Hospital, after an extended illness. He was the widower of Marie (Mangini) Murphy

Joseph was born June 25, 1948 in Waterbury, the son of the late Michael and Helen (Collins) Murphy. He was educated in local schools, and was a graduate of Crosby High School. Joseph spent many years working as a social worker where he mentored many incarcerated individuals. He also spent many years working as a Mayoral Aide in Mayor Edward D. Bergin Jr.'s administration. He was also known as a legendary bartender throughout the greater Waterbury area where he bartended for various bars and restaurants including Hemingway's and Bleechers. He enjoyed golfing and was a diehard New York Yankees fan and always looked forward to attending games with his son. He was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and a member of the Washington Hill Athletic Club as well as a parishioner of the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. Joe will be remembered for his quick wit and his ability to bring a smile to anyone's face. He was always willing to help others and loved to make people happy. Joe will be greatly missed by all who were blessed to know and love him.

Joseph is survived by his son, Michael Murphy and his wife, Tiffany of Naugatuck, his brother, Mark Murphy and his wife, Donna of SC., as well as his nephews, nieces, extended family members and many friends. He is predeceased by his brothers, Thomas and Michael Murphy and his sister, Margaret Jannetto.

Funeral services for Mr. Murphy will be held on Tuesday, October 3, 2017 at The Basilica of the Immaculate Conception 74 West Main St. when a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:00a.m. Those planning to attend are kindly invited to meet directly at the church. Burial will follow in St James Cemetery, Naugatuck. Relatives and friends may visit with Joseph's family on Monday, October 2, 2017 from 5:00 till 7:00p.m. at Casey's Eastside Memorial Funeral Home 1987 East Main St Waterbury.
