AT THE CASEY-O'DONNELL FAMILY FUNERAL HOME - WATERBURY CT. Karen Ann (Hanrahan) Johnston, 52, died peacefully on Thursday, January 6, 2011, surrounded by family and friends at Masonic Home and Hospital in Wallingford. A long time Waterbury resident, she was the beloved wife and best friend of Ned Johnston of Waterbury and the devoted sister of Peggy Hanrahan of Seattle WA.
Karen was born in Cornwall NY, a daughter of the late Michael J. and Marilyn (Caldon) Hanrahan. A graduate of Mount St. Mary's College in Newburgh NY, she spent her entire professional career as a medical technologist at St. Mary's Hospital.
Karen was an avid gardener, skilled cook, and artistic homemaker. She and Ned hosted many wonderful gatherings for friends and family at their home. Karen will be remembered for the many acts of kindness she extended to others. She was passionate about politics and the environment. She had a special place in her heart for her friends who a re new immigrants to this country. She was one of the Red Sox's best fans. Lily, her clumber spaniel, was a great joy to Karen as had been Moe Moe and Abby before her.
The family would like to thank Karen's many friends for their outpouring of support during her illness, especially during the past three weeks.
Funeral services for Karen will be held Monday, January 10, 2011 at 9:00am from the Casey-O'Donnell Family Funeral Home, 1581 East Main Street, Waterbury to Our Lady of Loreto Church for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am. Burial will follow in the New St. Joseph's Cemetery. Family and friends may visit at the funeral home on Sunday, January 9, 2011 from 3:00pm to 6:00pm. Memorial donations in Karen's honor may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul's Society, 114 Benedict Street, Waterbury CT 06706.
