Katharine Fasano

August 17, 1927 — March 29, 2014

WATERBURY - Mrs. Katharine Fasano, age 87, of Sylvan Avenue Waterbury, passed away peacefully with her family by her side after a valiant battle with cancer at St. Mary's Hospital Vitas and Innovative Hospice Care Unit on March 29, 2014. She was the widow of Rocco Fasano.

Katharine, or Kay as she was better known, was born on August 17, 1927 in Minersville PA, the daughter of the late A. Laurence Bender and Ida (Compy) Bender. She grew up in PA where she attended local schools before moving to Waterbury and graduating from Waterbury Catholic High School. She then attended St. Mary's School of Nursing where she earned her RN degree. After graduating she worked in several departments at the hospital. She spent many years as charge nurse at St. Mary's Hospital's ICU/CCU unit, where she was essential part in the process of setting up that unit.

Kay's life revolved around nursing and her family. She was part of the nursing contingent during the Great Flood of 1955, was picked up by drivers in 4 wheel drive vehicles during several winter storms, and driven to work by police during the riots of the early 70's. For Kay, her patients always came first and she took her job very seriously. After her retirement from St. Mary's Hospital, she continued to work private duty and finally at Hope Hall Nursing Home. She was a long time parishioner of St. Francis Xavier Church and a member of their prayer line. She was also one of the founders of the "Helping Hands", auxiliary that supported the clients and ran programs and fundraisers for The Waterbury Arc Inc. (WARC) and served as secretary of the auxiliary.

Katharine is survived by her daughter, Deborah Vitarelli and her husband Francis, two sons, Richard and James Fasano, both of Waterbury, her two grandsons, Anthony Vitarelli and Ian Fasano as well as several nieces and nephews including her niece Kathleen Sugrue, with whom she had a very special bond. The last of her generation, she is predeceased by her two sisters, Frances Fasano (and her husband Leonard who was brother to her husband Rocco), and Margaret Sugrue, in-laws Antoinette Vaccaro, Lucy Guarino, Anna Aurigemma, Mary Gizzo, Carmen Fasano and Ed Sugrue as well as several nieces and a nephew.
