WATERBURY - Kevin Curtis Smith, 54, of Waterbury, Connecticut, departed this life, on Monday, December 21, 2015 at St. Mary's Hospital. He was born in Hartford, Connecticut on 08/24/1961 to the late Pauline Smith and Sonny Lester. Kevin lived in Hartford, Bridgeport and Waterbury, Connecticut. At the age of six, Kevin resided at the Mansfield Training School and Hospital until he transitioned to his first group home. His last group home was the Oak Hill residential program. Kevin was diagnosed with Downs Syndrome and was not expected to live past eight years old. However, he lived a very full life. He worked, vacationed and had a great sense of humor. He loved to laugh, sing, dance, play the guitar and eat. Kevin attended the Mt. Hebron Baptist Church, Meriden CT.
He is survived by his two sisters, Christine Bello of Atlanta and Winnie Smith of Atlanta, and his brother, Stephen Smith (Lorraine), of Atlanta, his Aunt, Odell Martin, of Hartford. Eleven nieces and nephews, Gloria Blackwood, Russell Carter, Jr., Gregory Carter, Michael Smith, Jemar Smith, Ellsworth Grant, Jr., Stacey Williams, Asada Lawrence, and Sage Smith. Fifteen great-nieces and nephews: Jamall Blackwood Sr., Russell Carter III, Jamall Carter, Terrance Carter, Aurra Carter, Amala Carter, Jada Carter, Alexis Smith, Trinity Wetherington, Briana Grant, Brandon Grant, Carmen Grant, Candace Grant, Darrin Williams, Jr. and Winnie Williams, three great-great nephews, Malik Carter, Jamall Blackwood Jr, Jordan Blackwood, and a host of cousins.
Besides his parents. he was predeceased by two brothers, Ray Smith, and Chester Smith. Seven aunts, Johnnie Bunkley Boyd Smith, Evelyn Bunkley Barnes, Mildred Bunkley Davis, Florine Bunkley Cooper, Helen Bunkley Wright, Fannie Lotson and Margret Bunkley: and two uncles, Clifford Bunkley, and Howard Bunkley, his niece, Allison Carter, his nephew Scott Lathue. He will be remembered for the simple things, like laughter, smiles and the times we've shared.
Funeral services for Kevin will be held on Wednesday, December 30, 2015 at 11:30 a.m. from Casey's Eastside Memorial Funeral Home 1987 East Main St @ Southmayd Rd. Waterbury to Mt. Hebron Baptist Church, 84 Franklin St. Meriden for a service at 12:30 p.m. with Rev. Pastor Willie Young presiding. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family.
