WATERBURY- Mr. Lawrence "Larry" Thomas Cooley, age 68, of Meriden Rd. Waterbury, passed away on Thursday, January 9, 2014 at Yale New Haven Hospital with his family at his side after a brief illness. He was the husband of Elizabeth (Chavious) Cooley.
Mr. Cooley was born July 7th 1945 in Fayetteville North Carolina, the son of the late John Franklin and Annie (Lester) Cooley. He grew up in the Fayetteville area where he attended local schools and was a graduate of Fayetteville State University where he was a member of the Groove Phi Groove Fraternity. He moved to Connecticut in 1969 and earned his graduate degree from Southern Connecticut State University in health and physical education. Larry was a teacher for City of Waterbury, taught in several Waterbury schools and retired from Wallace Middle School in 2005, where he also coached basketball. He was involved in several area civic organizations including the Waterbury Kiwanis Club, and the Masonic Kellogg Lodge No. 5 of Waterbury. He was an active and longtime member of the First Congregational Church of Waterbury where he served as a deacon, a member of the Board of Trustees and also served on the Board of Directors of the Robin Ridge Apartments. Larry enjoyed gardening, and spending time outdoors. He also enjoyed reading, yoga, jogging, biking, and swimming.
Besides his loving wife, Elizabeth of 44 years, Larry is survived by his two sons, Kevin Cooley and his wife Juliane of East Hartford, and Rodrique Cooley of Waterbury. He also leaves his Aunt, Amelia Gurley of Roland North Carolina and his two grandchildren, Brandon James Cooley, and Sarah Elizabeth Cooley.
Funeral services for Mr. Cooley will be held on Saturday, January 18, 2014 at First Congregational Church of Waterbury, 222 W. Main St Waterbury at 10:00am. Those planning to attend are asked to meet directly at the church. Burial will be held privately at the convenience of the family. Relatives and friends may visit with Larry's family on Tuesday, January 14, 2014 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Eastside Memorial, a Casey Family Funeral Home and Tribute Center, 1987 East Main St @ Southmayd Rd. Waterbury. Memorial donations in Larry's memory may be made to the First Congregational Church of Waterbury 222 W. Main St Waterbury, CT 06702.
