AT THE O'NEILL FUNERAL HOME IN OAKVILLE
Oakville, CT Lawrence R. Murphy, 71, of Oakville, husband of Catherine R. (Weakland) Murphy, died Thursday at St. Mary's Hospital Vitas Unit.

Mr. Murphy was born July 26, 1940 in Waterbury, CT a son of the late Michael F. Murphy and Anna Mariah (Carter) Murphy Scanlon and had been an Oakville resident for the past 48 years. Larry grew up in Waterbury and graduated from Washington School and Leavenworth High School, Class of 1958. He was a United States Air Force Veteran, having served during the Vietnam War. He was a Past Commander of the American Legion Corporal Coyle Post No1, where he was a member for 45 years. Larry retired from Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, where he had worked at the Southington Newell Street Plant for most of the 38 years of his employment and for the past 10 years he worked as a driver for Curtin Livery. Larry touched many lives in a positive way by his countless hours of volunteering, most notably with the state and local Special Olympics, as well as having volunteered during the Special Olympic World Games in New Haven, CT. A Symphony on Ice volunteer for 25 years, Larry also was recognized for his work with the Salvation Army Youth Shelter as well as having touched many lives as an active member of A.A. Larry loved spending time with his family and friends and truly loved life and was a parishioner of The Basilica of The Immaculate Conception in Waterbury.

Besides his wife, Mr. Murphy leaves 3-sons, David J. Murphy and his wife Christine, Kevin L. Murphy and Lawrence R. Murphy, Jr and his wife Shannon., 3-daughters Arlene Murphy Hardwick, Janet L. Michaud and her husband Shane and Kathleen M. Partin and her husband Mark, 3-brothers Robert J. Murphy, Michael F. Murphy and Walter H. Scanlon, 4-sisters, Ellen A. Clement, Muriel N. Brasche, Barbara Sullivan Rossi and Joan M. Scanlon, 12 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. As well as several brother in laws, sister in laws and many loving nieces and nephews Lawrence was pre-deceased by his brother William J. Scanlon.

The Funeral for Mr. Murphy will be Monday, July 9, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at the Basilica of The Immaculate Conception, 74 West Main St Waterbury to Celebrate the Liturgy of Christian Burial. Rites of Committal and Interment will follow with full military honors in Mt Olivet Cemetery. Those planning on attending are asked to meet directly at the church. On Sunday July 8th 2012 from 3:00-7:00pm To honor Larry's memory, contributions may be made to the Watertown Fire Department, 935 Main St., Watertown, CT 06795 or to Watertown Area Association for Special Citizens, c/o Rocco Calabrese, 1591 Litchfield Rd, Watertown, CT 06795. Members of the American Legion Corporal Coyle Post No 1 will meet at the funeral home Sunday at 6:30.
