Lawrence J. O'Connell

October 3, 1932 — March 24, 2014

WATERBURY, CT. Lawrence J. O'Connell, age 81, of Decicco Rd. Waterbury and Venice Florida, passed away peacefully at Masonicare of Newtown after an extended illness on Monday March 24th 2014. He was the widower of Elizabeth "Betty" (Roberts) O'Connell.

Mr. O'Connell was born October 3, 1932 in Waterbury, CT, the son of the late John and Bridget (Courtney) O'Connell. He was a graduate of Leavenworth High School and proudly served his country with the US Air Force during the Korean War Conflict. Lawrence was a longtime employee of The Republican American newspaper where he worked in the composition room as a compositor before his retirement. Lawrence always looked forward to spending his winters at his home in Venice, Florida and enjoyed traveling with his wife, especially his trips to Ireland and Hawaii as well as taking cruises. He was a member of the Prospect Senior Center, enjoyed bowling at Wolcott lanes and was a long time a parishioner of The Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in addition to being a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was an avid Boston Red Sox and NY Giants fan.

He is survived by his two daughters; Helen Cudney of Waterbury and Barbara Styles and her husband Kevin of Wolcott, his brothers, John O'Connell of Middlebury and Jerry O'Connell of Oakville, his grandchildren, Christopher, Amy, and Heather Cudney and Kaitlynn Styles as well as his great granddaughter Cyncere Stephens, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by her sisters, Mary Holland and Katherine Collins.

Lawrence's family would like to acknowledge and thank the staff at the Masonicare of Newtown for the sympathetic, wonderful, and compassionate care that they provided to Lawrence and his family during his stay.

Funeral services for Mr. O'Connell will be held on Friday, March 28th, 2014 at 11:00 am at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, 74 West Main St Waterbury when a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Those planning to attend are asked to meet directly at the church. Burial with military honors will follow in Calvary Cemetery. There are no calling hours.
