Mrs. Lena A. Cronin

January 4, 1927 — March 29, 2023

A Long Life, Well Lived -

WATERTOWN – Lena A. Cronin, age 96 of Watertown, formerly of Waterbury died peacefully in the comfort of her home on Wednesday, March 29, 2023. She was the widow of the late Thomas J. Cronin.

Lena was born Pasqualina Carozza in Waterbury, on Jan. 4, 1927, to the late Pasquale and Angeline (Angelicola) Carozza. Just nine months old when her father died, Lena was raised by her mother and stepfather, Anthony Campus. Lena was one of 10 siblings in her blended Italian American family. She was close to all of her siblings: Peter S. Carozza Sr., Michael Carozza, Daniel Campus, Frank Campus, Bernard Campus, Antoinette (Toni) Carozza Sullivan, Concetta (Connie) Campus Datelle, Catherine Campus Coscia, and Mary Campus. Lena was the last survivor among the Carozza-Campus siblings.

A Waterbury resident for 92 of her 96 years, Lena was born in Town Plot and grew up in Brooklyn. She attended Duggan School and Wilby High School. Lena spent the majority of her working life – 25 years – at Anchor Fasteners, as a lab employee. She was treasurer of the credit union. Lena retired in 1989.

Lena was known for her wide-ranging interests. She was very proud of her Italian heritage and Catholic faith. Everyone who knew Lena knew she was a big sports fan, with a particular fondness for the New York Yankees. Lena often pointed out that the year she was born saw the Yankees field one of the greatest teams in baseball history. She also loved to follow the University of Connecticut men’s and women’s basketball teams. Additionally, Lena was an avid watcher and reader of news. She was knowledgeable about and had opinions on many news items. Until very recently, Lena read the Republican-American from cover to cover each day. Lena had a sharp mind until the end of her life, for which her family is very grateful.

Speaking of which, Lena treasured nothing more than her large family. The stories of her devotion to her family are too numerous to list, but her family notes she leaves a legacy of love and special times that will be treasured forever. Our mom and grandma was one of a kind. She made the world a better place for all of us and we are truly blessed to have had her in our lives for all these precious years.

Left to honor her legacy and cherish her memory are her children, Thomas J. Cronin and his wife, Nancy, of Watertown; Joseph M. Cronin, and his wife, Janis, of Waterbury; Mary Beth Stevens, and her husband, Attorney William L. Stevens, of Watertown; and David P. Cronin and his fiancée, Barbara Peluse, of Hamden. She also is survived by her grandchildren, Jennifer Cronin Arcari and her husband, Anthony, of Cromwell; Matthew P. Stevens, of Watertown; and Erin L. Stevens and her partner, Zachary Rowe, of White River Junction, Vt. Additionally, Lena leaves many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.

The family would like to thank Dr. Arvind Suri and his staff, for many years of compassionate and excellent care of Lena, as well as Lena’s hospice nurse, Sarah, and hospice aide, Jen for all of their wonderful help and care in recent months.

To honor Lena’s memory and at her direct request, contributions to the Waterbury Police Athletic League (PAL): 64 Division St., Waterbury, CT 06704, would be greatly appreciated by Lena and her family because Lena was very proud of her nephew’s service to the City of Waterbury, as decorated police officers.
