AT THE O'NEILL FUNERAL HOME - Leonard A. O'Connor, 82, of Watertown, died peacefully at home on Thursday, August 6,2009 after a lengthy illness. He was the husband of Barbara Blais O'Connor.
Mr. O'Connor was born November 19, 1926 in Springfield MA; son of the late James and Eva (Tatro) O'Connor. He was a veteran of the US Navy having proudly served his country during World War II. He graduated from the University Of Massachusetts in 1950 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree and held a Master of Arts Degree in Economics (Banking and Finance) from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Juris Doctor Degree from the University of Connecticut.
He was employed by the Securities & Exchange Commission in 1951 and joined the Treasury Department of The Connecticut Light & Power Company in 1952. He transferred to the tax department in 1956 and was transferred to Northeast Utilities and named tax manager when NU was organized in 1966. He was named Treasurer in 1970 and Vice-President in 1975. He was also Vice -President & Treasurer of NU's subsidiaries and of Connecticut Yankee Atomic Power Company. Prior to the spin-off of Yankee Energy from NU, he assumed the post of Vice-President, Finance & Accounting for gas operations of NU. He assumed his positions with Yankee Gas in July of 1989. He retired as Vice-President & Chief Financial Officer and Director of Yankee Energy Systems Inc. and it's three subsidiaries. He was responsible for all long-term & short-term financing, cash management, accounting & internal auditing, and pension plan investments for the company. He retired after 39 years within the utility industry. He was a member of the American & Connecticut Bar Associations and The Finance & Management Committees of the American Gas Association. He was also on the Board of Directors for BayBank Connecticut.
Upon his retirement, Leonard found great pleasure and much reward advocating on behalf of citizens with disabilities.
Besides his wife, he leaves four children, Anita O'Connor of Hoffman, North Carolina; Charles O'Connor of Dorchester, MA; Stephen O'Connor of West Palm Beach, FL; Thomas O'Connor of Potomac, MD; and their mother Mary Louise O'Connor of Pine Hurst, NC; his brother Donald O'Connor (Nancy) of Falmouth, MA; his sister Sheila Dunn (James) of Brimfield, MA; one grandchild Patrick of Melrose, MA; three step-children Scott, Heather, & Kevin; three step-grandchildren Benjamin, Yadira, & Dylan. He was pre-deceased in death by a brother James (Kathryn.) He also leaves many nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank the Watertown Convalarium and the Watertown V.N.A "Health At Home Hospice" for their exceptionally compassionate care.
