THE CASEY FAMILY IS HONORED TO BE CARING FOR AND ASSISTING THE FAMILY OF LORETTA LEONARD

"Wolcott's Oldest Lifelong Citizen"

WOLCOTT - Mrs. Loretta M. Leonard, age 103 of Wolcott, passed away peacefully in her own home on Saturday, June 1, 2019 in the loving presence of her daughter and granddaughter. She was the widow of Robert E. Leonard.

Loretta was born on May 11, 1916 in Waterbury CT the oldest child of Jennie (Fasano) and Biagio Nigro. At the age of 4 months she moved into the modest home her father built on Woodtick Rd. Loretta was proud of many things including her Italian heritage, her lifelong residency in Wolcott and her lifetime membership in the Wolcott Historical Society. She also enjoyed telling people she took the first emergency call as a dispatcher for the Wolcott Police Dept. in 1957. Her favorite pastime was bowling which she had to give up after 20 plus years. She was also an avid NASCAR fan as well as UCONN Womens Basketball. A graduate of Wilby High School, Loretta worked as a machine operator at the original Peter Paul Plant in Naugatuck, where she remained a reliable and loyal employee for 35 years. Perhaps her greatest sense of pride beside her family, was her reputation as "The Cake Lady" having made hundreds of wedding and all occasion cakes. Each and every one was a labor of love and many were given as gifts. If you came to visit with Loretta you would inevitably leave with a banana nut bread

Life was difficult for her at times. No matter how many times she got knocked down, she always managed to get back up. Loretta was a single parent, who raised two daughters to be strong and independent, like she was. She will be remembered for being loyal and dependable, with a giving heart. She would go without to help anyone in need. The citizens of Wolcott saw fit to recognize Loretta's longevity and commitment to her family, friends and community. She was both proud and humbled by the citations she received over the years and for being chosen, Italian Mayor for the Day and receiving the Roseann Barrett Community Service Award. She was thrilled to be honored in a ceremony on the Green as Wolcott's oldest lifelong citizen.

In addition to her daughter, Roberta Leonard, Loretta is survived by her granddaughter, Jennie. Besides her husband and parents, Loretta was predeceased by her sister, Beatrice Moran, brothers, Dante and Jesmond Nigro and her daughter, Lorena.
