WATERBURY - Louis M. Ruggiero, 89, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 17, 2016 surrounded by the love and comfort of his family. He was the husband to his beloved wife of 64 years, Barbara Joan (Donovan) Ruggiero.

Born on January 3, 1927 in Waterbury he was the son of the late Alfonse and Giovannina (Iorio) Ruggiero. Louis was a graduate of Crosby High School, Bentley College and University of Connecticut (Bachelors of Accounting), and he earned a Masters degree from the University of Hartford. He was a non-bearer of arms in the Korean War. He began his career as an accountant for the City of Waterbury Water Department where he met his wife, a bacteriologist for the City. He spent much of his professional career, 32 years, as a math and business teacher at Crosby High School where he was a devoted educator who cared deeply about his students. When he retired in 1988 he committed himself to the service of his family, a role that most defined who he was and what mattered to him. With his wife, he enjoyed annual trips to Europe and time spent at his family home, "R House," in Eastham, MA. His family will remember the myriad of ways that he expressed his love for them, most especially cooking for them. He was a parishioner of SS Peter & Paul Church.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Joan Ruggiero, his four children and their spouses, Barbara Ruggiero, Ph.D. and David Whitehouse, M.D., Mark Ruggiero, M.D. and Peggy Harrison Ruggiero, Lynn Ruggiero, Ph.D, and John Scileppi, Ph.D., and Neil Ruggiero and Jeanine Ruggiero, ten grandchildren, Meredith Whitehouse and her husband Jeff Mascia, Geoffrey Whitehouse and his wife Dana Pavarini , Christian Whitehouse, Gabrielle Whitehouse, Michael Ruggiero, Julia Ruggiero, Luke Scileppi, Zachary Ruggiero, John McIntosh and his wife Anne Myers, Marianne McIntosh, and one great grand-daughter, Neve Mascia. In addition, he is survived by his two sisters, Gloria Ruggiero and Anita Miller, and one brother, Novello Ruggiero M.D. as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Geraldine Ruggiero, and his two brothers Joseph Ruggiero and John Ruggiero.
Funeral Services for Mr. Ruggiero will be held on Thursday, April 21, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. from Casey's Eastside Memorial Funeral Home 1987 East Main St Waterbury to SS Peter & Paul Church 67 Southmayd Rd. to celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Relatives and friends may visit with Louis's family on Wednesday evening from 5:00 till 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
