PROSPECT  - It is with great sadness and broken hearts that the family of Ms. Maria Olga Gomez “Mama”  age 84 of Waterbury, announce her peaceful passing, on Monday, May 13, 2024 in the comfort of her granddaughter, Shanee Mina- Hunter’s home after a valiant battle with Alzheimer’s disease brief illness.  She was the longtime companion of the late, Guillermo Mina.

Maria was born on September 18, 1939 in Bogota Colombia the daughter of the late Eustorgio and Maria deJesus Gomez. Maria is so very proud of becoming a citizen of the United States so much so that she refused to allow her children to speak anything but English outside her home. She first worked for Uniroyal and then Duracell Battery but most recently was a personal care assistant with Almost Family Inc. A devout Catholic, there was nothing more important to Maria than her family. She was famous for her annual Christmas brunch where her entire family and dozens of their friends were welcomed into her home to celebrate the holiday.  While she enjoyed gardening, she was also a woman of elegance and class always being sure she looked her best.  Maria was exceptional in almost every way but she excelled the most at being a devoted mother, sister, grandmother and great grandmother. Our family thanks you Mama, for every prayer you uttered for us, for the many sacrifices you made for us, for thousands of hugs you shared with us and the unending love you instilled in all of us.

Left to honor her memory and cherish her legacy are her daughters, Jeanette White and her husband Curt of Prospect and Katherina Mina of MD, her stepchildren; Guillermo M.  Mina, Daniel Mina  and Jessica Mina. She also leaves her siblings; Hernando Gomez, Maria Isabel Arenas de Castano and Gladys Arenas de Mendez. Mama was blessed with her devoted grandchildren who loved and cherished her; Monica Jacobson and husband Erik, Daniel A. Mina, Gabriel Mina, Christina Paniagua and husband Alex, Melissa Cromwell and husband Derek, Jason Soto, Shanee’ Mina-Hunter, Christopher L. Hunter Jr., Lauren Hunter, Lachai and Mina White and lastly her great granddaughter Alana Thomas along with 16 other great grand children as well as several nieces and nephews.
