THE CASEY FAMILY IS HONORED TO BE CARING FOR AND ASSISTING THE FAMILY OF MARINO MONTI

"Devoted to his family"

OAKVILLE - Marino Monti Sr. age 82 of Oakville, passed away peacefully in the loving arms of his family on September 30, 2021 at Waterbury Hospital after a valiant battle with several illnesses. Throughout his fight, he never once complained and focused primarily on making his wife of 55 years smile and laugh each day.

Marino was born in Castelnuovo di Garfagnana di Provincia di Lucca, Tuscany, Italy on December 18, 1938. He was the son of the late Vittorio and Ambrosina Monti. He was predeceased by his brother Corato Monti and his sister Coradina Monti. Marino came to America when he was 16 years old, making the voyage by himself on the SS Andrea Doria. Upon arriving, and not speaking a word of English, he got to work immediately as a dress cutter in New Haven, CT. Shortly thereafter he met his soulmate, the love of his life and his best friend, Cathy Rosa. Marino and Cathy married in 1966 and embarked on their life together with a strong shared work ethic, core devotion to family, strong and unwavering practice and devotion to their faith, and an overriding sense of laughter and playfulness in all that they did.

Marino and Cathy achieved the American dream. They purchased Cork & Keg, a liquor store in Southbury, CT, and worked together each day side by side. Their customers adored them and often built personal relationships with many shared laughs and stories. After selling the liquor store, Marino began a new business venture with a hair salon franchise before ultimately retiring. Marino was an avid golfer and loved his Mens golf leagues. He beamed with pride when the local paper published his hole-in-one with the headline declaring "Monti Aces" a par 3 at Crestbook. His summers were also spent tending to his garden, and his falls were busy jarring sauce and making homemade wine. Marino transitioned from golf to bowling in the winter and loved to recount how he and his teammates fared each week. He also loved his weekly card game at the Italian Club, mostly for the camaraderie and espresso. He was a proud member of the Cercemaggiorie Community Club.

Marino was such a kind, gentle soul. He taught us that family comes first above all else and that life is about honest hard work, integrity and being surrounded by great friends. He had a wonderful sense of humor and often delivered his well-timed punchline with a signature "funny face" as Cathy would call it. He always kept us laughing. He was happiest "with company" as he would say. He loved having everyone around the table with plenty of homemade wine, cured meats, cheeses, espresso and cognac. It was certainly about the food, but at the heart of it, it was about the loving community of family and friends that made for a wonderful life.

In addition to his loving wife, Marino leaves to honor his legacy and treasure his memory his son, Marino Monti Jr. and his wife, Jeanne Monti, of Cheshire, CT and his daughter, Marianne Wallace and her husband, Darren Wallace, of Fairfield, CT. He also leaves behind his loving grandchildren, Taylor and Michael Monti and Catherine, Sarah and Hannah Wallace. He is survived by many brothers and sisters-in-law who always treated him like he was their own sibling, as well as many adoring nieces and nephews.

The family will hold a Memorial Mass on Saturday, December 18, 2021, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary Magdalen Church, 16 Buckingham St., Oakville, CT 06779. The O'Neill Funeral Home 742 Main St Oakville has been honored to assist the Monti family with arrangements during this difficult time.
