AT THE O'NEILL FUNERAL HOME - Marjorie S. O'Neill age 85 of Thomaston Road died peacefully on Saturday May 14, 2011 at Apple Nursing and Rehabilitation after a brief illness. She was the widow of John G. O'Neill.
Marge was born March 7, 1926 in Naugatuck, Connecticut to the late Irving and Gladys (Candee) Smith. She graduated from Naugatuck High School in 1943 and Waterbury Hospital School of Nursing in 1946 as a Registered Nurse. She married John G. O'Neill in 1948 and moved to Stamford, settling in Oakville where they founded the John G. O'Neill Funeral Home in 1953. They retired in 1987 and made their home in Watertown.
Marge was a loving mother and compassionate nurse and funeral director. A devoted fan of the UCONN Women's Basketball team, she also liked to sew, knit, travel and cook, famous for her bread baking skills which she passed along to her children. She was an antique buff and could never pass up a "tag sale" sign. Marge and John were members of "The Club", a group of lifelong friends who gathered for monthly card games and family vacations. For many years, she was an active member of the Saint Mary Magdalen Church and the VFW Women's Auxiliary.
Marge is survived by her loving family, two sons John G. O'Neill Jr. and his wife Katie, Timothy W. O'Neill and his wife Patti both of Watertown, four daughters Deborah Napolitano and her husband Bob of Tiburon, California, Sharon Martin and her husband John formerly of Litchfield, Karen Newman and her husband Kevin of Auburndale, Mass, Beth O'Neill of San Francisco, CA., eight grandchildren and a brother Franklin Smith of Wallingford.
Funeral Thursday at 9 a.m. from the funeral home to Saint John the Evangelist Church for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10. Burial will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Friends may call at the John G.
