Mrs. Mary Lou Matney

WATERBURY - It is with profound sadness that the family of Mary Lou Matney, age 84, of Waterbury, CT, share the news of her peaceful passing in the comfort of her home on Friday, March 7, 2025.

Mary Lou was born on April 2, 1940, in Anderson, Indiana, the daughter of the late Raymond Akers and Martha (Hunt) Fisher. She spent her career at Bozzuto’s in Cheshire, CT, before retiring. Mary was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who cherished her family above all else. Mary Lou will be greatly missed by all who were blessed to know and love her.

Left to honor her legacy and cherish her memory are her daughters, LaDonna Matney-Dowie and Patricia Matney, as well as her former son-in-law, Thomas M. Dowie. She was a proud and loving grandmother to Brandon Costello and his wife Katie, Bradley Costello and his wife Sandy, Sabrina Brooks, Emerson Brooks, MaryJayne Barber and her husband Peter Jr., and Thomas Matney Dowie. Her legacy continues through her eight great-grandchildren: Tyler Costello, Parker Costello, London Costello, Paisley Costello, Hannah Van Stone, Liliana Van Stone, Peter Barber III, and Paige Barber. Mary is also survived by her beloved sister, Donna Sue Forstner, and her husband Stephen. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Duane Matney; her son, Kevin Allen Matney; and her brother, Billy Lee Akers.

In accordance with Mary’s wishes, funeral services will be private and held at the family’s convenience.
