Waterbury - Mary (Marie) Grace Lynch of Waterbury, whose active life and generous spirit were centered on love of family, passed away on Saturday, March 5, after a valiant battle with cancer.
She was 78. The widow of George Lynch, Mary was a mother and grandmother, faithful friend, lifelong volunteer and world traveler.
Born on March 29, 1937 to the late Angelo and Ann (Forte) Giordano, she attended Waterbury schools and graduated from Wilby High School. Mary spent many years working as a store clerk for the former First National and Finast grocery stores before her retirement. A parishioner of Saints Peter and Paul Church, she also gave much of her time as a volunteer at Waterbury Hospital and the Seven Angels Theater. Mary's many interests included yoga, water aerobics, reading and walking. She loved to travel and visited Alaska, Ireland, Greece and Egypt, among other destinations.
Her three grandsons were the most important part of her life, and she enjoyed vacations with them in Maine, the New Jersey Shore and Cape Cod.
Even in the last months of her life, Mary refused to let her illness define or stop her. With help from many loving friends, she attended luncheons, shopping and plays. Mary also received wonderful care from Beacon Brook Health Center in Naugatuck, Hospital of Central CT Hartford Healthcare Cancer Institute and the Hospital of Central CT New Britain Campus.
Mary's survivors include her daughter, Pamela Lynch and her husband, Michael Hamrah, of Prospect; George Lynch and his wife, Theresa Lynch, and their children, Christopher and Matthew, of Prospect, with whom she made her home during much of her illness; and Kenneth Lynch and his wife, Paula, and their son, Joshua, of Plymouth.
A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 12 at 10 a.m. at Casey's Eastside Memorial, 1987 East Main St., Waterbury. Burial will be held privately at the convenience of the family.
