WATERTOWN - Mary "Maria" (Labich) Mondak age 93 of Watertown, passed away peacefully on Christmas morning at home, after a brief illness surrounded by those she loved. She was the widow of Stephen Mondak with whom she spent 67 years.

Mary was born on October 23, 1927 in Klenova, Czechoslovakia, the daughter of the late Michael and Maria (Koban) Labich. She emigrated to the United States at the age of 3 with her mother and sister Ann, arriving at Ellis Island in New York. They entered as American citizens as her father was born in Mt Pocono, PA. As a young man he returned to the US in search of a better life and then sent for his wife and daughters. They settled in Dunmore PA. Mary was a graduate of Dunmore High School and a former member of St. Michael the Archangel Byzantine Catholic Church in Dunmore and at the time of her passing was an active parishioner of St. John the Evangelist Church in Watertown. As a young woman, Mary worked as a bookkeeper in businesses in Dunmore and Scranton PA. Mary and her husband lived in New Jersey, then moving to Watertown in 1964. Mary worked in the cafeteria at Baldwin School and was later the cafeteria manager at Griffin School. She enjoyed cooking, gardening and was great at crossword puzzles. What was most important to Mary was her family, especially her grandchildren. She enjoyed many happy times when they were young and she was so very proud of all of them as they grew to be successful adults.

Left to honor Mary's love and legacy are her sons; Stephen (Joan) Mondak of Thomaston, Thomas Mondak of Watertown, John (Kelly) Mondak of Watertown and James Mondak of Watertown and her daughter Maria (Tim) Hill of Bethlehem. Mary and Stephen were blessed with 7 grandchildren; Stephen, Lauren, Taylor, Julie, Christopher, Nicholas and Joseph. Mary was predeceased by her sister, Ann Croop, brother, Michael Labich and sister-in-law, Susan Labich. Mary: Daj Boze scestja (May God give you happiness), Z Bohom (God be with you).

Funeral Services for Mrs. Mondak will be held on Monday, January 4, 2021 at 9:30 a.m. from the O'Neill Funeral Home 742 Main St Oakville, CT 06779 to St John the Evangelist Main St Watertown to celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Mt Olivet Cemetery. Family and friends may visit with Mary's family for a walk-through visitation only on Monday morning from 8:00 a.m. till 9:30 a.m. To honor Mary's memory, donations to St Jude's Children Research Hospital at www.stjude.org or to Wounded Warrior Project at https://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/donate , would be greatly appreciated by her family.
