Michael E. Rayel

WATERBURY- Michael E. Rayel, age 89, of Waterbury, passed away Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at St. Mary's Hospital. He was the husband of Evette (Collins) Rayel.

Mr. Rayel was born October 11, 1924 in Waterbury, the son of the late Michael J. and Mary (Kehoe) Rayel. He was a graduate of St. Mary's Grammar School and attended Leavenworth High School and worked at the French Small Tube Division of American Brass Co. where he met his wife, the love of his life, before enlisting in the US Navy. Michael proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II where was stationed in England during the D-Day Invasion and was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries received during the battle. After returning home from the war, he joined the Waterbury Fire Department and retired as a Captain in the Marshal's Office in 1986 after 37 years of dedicated service. Mike's greatest passion and enjoyment was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren who were the apple of his eye.

Besides his wife Evette of 66 years, Michael is survived by his children, Michael C. Rayel and his wife Barbara of Old Lyme, Kevin M. Rayel of Waterbury, Mark J. Rayel of Waterbury, Elaine M. Marano and her husband Frederick of Watertown, Doreen Bousaada and her husband Michael of Middlebury, his seven grandchildren, Michael, Matthew, Patrick, David, Lori, Michelle and Emily, four great-grandchildren Adlyn, Nathan, Matthew and Brianna, as well as several nieces and nephews. Michael was predeceased by his son, Edward G. Rayel and two sisters Mary Kelly and Theresa McGee.

Funeral services for Mr. Rayel will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2014 11:30am at Saint Michael's Church 62 Saint Michael Dr. Waterbury, CT to celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial. Those planning to attend should go directly to the church. Burial with full military and Fire Dept. honors will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Watertown. Relatives and friends may visit with Michael's family on Friday evening at Eastside Memorial, a Casey Family Funeral Home and Tribute Center, 1987 East Main St @ Southmayd Rd. Waterbury from 5:00 to 8:00pm. Memorial donation's in Michael's memory may be made the Saint Jude's Children's Research Hospital at 262 Danny Thomas Place Memphis, TN 38105.
