Mr. Michael Szumigala

February 9, 1973 — October 24, 2024

Loving son, husband, father, brother and friend.

WOODBURY - It is with profound sadness and broken hearts that the family of Michael G. Szumigala, age 51 of Woodbury share the news of his unexpected passing at Waterbury Hospital on Thursday, October 24th 2024. He was a devoted husband, father, son, brother, friend and care giver.

Michael was born on February 9, 1973 in Waterbury, CT, the son of Anne (Phalen) Szumigala and the late Michael P. Szumigala. Mike affectionately known by all his friends and family as “Zoom” was a graduate of Holy Cross High School and later received his nursing degree from Naugatuck Valley Community College. Known for his passion for hockey, Michael was an enthusiastic supporter of the Boston Bruins, as well as a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Boston Red Sox. His dedication to healthcare and Emergency Medicine began with his work as a Paramedic at Medstar/AMR ambulance, Norwalk Hospital, and Danbury Ambulance, as well as his later role as a Registered Nurse at Middlesex, Norwalk, and St. Mary's Hospitals where he worked in several departments including in the emergency room and Intensive Care units. His love for history, especially anything related to WWII, was something he shared with those around him. A man well known for his wit and incredible sense of humor, Michael will be fondly remembered for his sarcastic charm, always finding a way to bring laughter to those he encountered. Michael was a giant of everything good; integrity, honesty, and true humor. And while he could be a true joker and source of great fun, those traits pale in comparison to the love and commitment he had for his family and friends, especially his wife, children, mom and siblings.

Left to cherish his memory and honor his legacy, besides his mother, Anne Michael is survived by his wife, Lori (Maloney) Szumigala and his two daughters, Nora and Kiera Szumigala, his siblings; Andrew Szumigala of Waterbury, Ellen Szumigala of Waterbury, Michele Ormsby of Meriden, Karen Dunn and her husband Andrew of Waterbury and Anne Sunderland and her husband Donald of Rocky Hill as well as his 7 nieces and nephews as well as many cousins and other extended family members and many friends.
