Devoted to her family and her patients
WATERBURY– Michelle Suzanne (Day) Mendes, age 61 of Waterbury, passed away peacefully surrounded by the love and care of her family, in the comfort of her home, on Saturday evening December 30, 2023.
Michelle was born on December 22, 1962 in Haverhill MA, the daughter of the late William H. and Dorothy (Grosse) Day. She was educated in local schools and began a career of caring for the elderly and infirmed at the Alzheimer’s Resource Center of Southington. She was so committed to caring for others that she was determined to get her nursing degree and even though she was suffering from cancer, she achieved her goal and became a licensed practical nurse to care for the patients that she loved. Her most recent employment was at Brandywine Rehab in Litchfield. While her passion was nursing, her most important job and commitment in her life was to her family, especially her children. Michelle was exceptional in almost every way but she was most proud of her children and instilled in each of them the importance of family, a strong work ethic, a good education and caring for each other. Our family thanks you, Mom, for every prayer you uttered for us, for the many sacrifices you made for us, for the thousands of hugs you shared with us, and for the unending love you instilled in all of us. She was loved beyond words and will be missed beyond measure.
Left to honor her legacy and cherish her memory, are her four children: daughters, Maria Mendes and her husband Nick of Waterbury, Elizabeth Mendes of Durham NC, her sons, Arceoly Mendes of Watertown and Patrick Mendes and his fiancé, Sara Levasseur of Torrington.
She also leaves her siblings, Karen, Scott, William Jr, Gary, Dennis, Wayne, Lori, and Cynthia. She was predeceased by her sister Robin. She also leaves her dearest friend and constant companion, Edward Swierbitowicz and her two loyal four-legged companions, Toby and Hank, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
