SARASOTA FL - Morton G. Mansfield, Jr., age 81 formerly of Waterbury CT, and Murrells Inlet SC, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 15, 2019 at the Tidewell Hospice House in Sarasota FL. He was the husband of MaryEllen (Barringer) Mansfield, his devoted wife and best friend of nearly 61 years.
Mort was born on May 22, 1938 in Newport RI, the son of the late Jessie M. (Rasmussen) Mansfield-Morey. He was educated in local schools and proudly served his country as a Seabee in the U.S. Navy from 1955-1963. He and his family settled in Waterbury where Mort became an officer for the Waterbury Police Department and then transferred his employment to the Fire Dept. He was a proud member of Waterbury's bravest and was a decorated and well liked member of the department until his retirement in 1989. For many years he was assigned as driver to Truck 1, Headquarters, the Emergency Car and Assistant for the Deputy Chief. He retired, assigned to Engine 5 the company nearest his home. He moved to Murrells Inlet in 2004 and finally to Englewood FL, in 2019.
Mort was a lifetime member of the B.P.O.Elks as well as a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, American Legion, and Moose Club, where he enjoyed volunteering his time while serving the community. He also enjoyed camping, golfing, fishing, and spending time at the beach. He always mentioned Cape Cod MA, as his favorite place on earth. He will be greatly missed by all who were blessed to know and love him. He is preceded in death by his mother Jessie and his brother David Mansfield of Aurora CO.
Left to honor his memory and cherish his love and legacy besides his wife are his children, Rena and her husband, Col Robert Thompson currently stationed in Germany, his son, Kenneth and his wife, Barbara of Cheshire CT, and his daughter, Rhonda and her husband, Wesley Monge of Sarasota FL. Mort and MaryEllen were blessed with 4 grandchildren, Shaun Thompson of Orlando, Meagan Thompson of Williamsburg VA, Caleigh and Rylan Monge both of Sarasota. He is also survived by his brother, Richard Mansfield and wife, Sharon of Venice FL, sisters, Shirley Brown and husband, Robert of Bethlehem CT and Nancy Labbe and husband, Robert of Woodbury CT, and sister-in-law, Gini Mansfield of Aurora CO.
Funeral services for Mr Mansfield will be held in Waterbury at a future date to be announced. A local service of remembrance in Sarasota will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at Your Traditions Funeral Home 2118 Constitution Blvd Sarasota FL 34231.
