WATERTOWN - Nelda R. (Grindle) Smart, age 88, of Beach Ave Watertown, died Friday at Waterbury Hospital. She was the widow of Claude Smart
Nelda was born on June 10, 1921 in Penobscot ME in her families home on Togus Mountain the daughter of the late George A. and Iva (Leech) Grindle. She graduated from Clark High School in Penobscot Maine and proudly served our country as a member of the Women's Air Corp (W.A.C.) during WWII. She earned the rank of Private First Class and performed aircraft repair at Bradley Field in CT. She was a former employee of Wallace Barnes Associated Spring Company in Bristol where she worked in the production department for many years before retiring. Nelda enjoyed spending time outside and was a devoted animal lover and had a passion for horses and equestrian hobbies.
Mrs. Smart is survived by her son Robert G. Smart and his wife Anne of Tarrytown NY. A granddaughter, Clara Smart as well as several close friends, and family members.
Funeral services for Mrs. Smart will be held on Monday, February 15, 2010 at 10:00am in the Matoon Chapel of the Evergreen Cemetery, Watertown. Burial with full military honors will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. There are no calling hours. The O'Neill Funeral Home, 742 Main Street, Oakville, CT has been entrusted to assist the family with arrangements.
