Devoted to his family


WATERBURY - Nelson Velez Sr., age 80, of Waterbury, passed away peacefully surrounded by the love and comfort of his family on Thursday, February 29, 2024, in the Vitas Inpatient Unit of St. Mary’s Hospital. He was the devoted husband of the late Gloria (Correa) Velez.

Nelson was born on April 8, 1943, in Penuelas, Puerto Rico, the son of the late Hipolita and Leonor (Pabey) Velez. He was educated in P.R. before immigrating to Waterbury where he worked for many years as a machine operator at the Waterbury Companies before retiring. Nelson was devoted to his family and his faith, and he enjoyed word puzzles and watching old cowboy movies but most of all, spending as much time as possible with his family. He will be sadly missed by all who were blessed to know and love him.

Left behind to cherish his memory are his children; Nelson Velez Jr. and his wife, Lucia, Deb Velez and her fiancé, Jay Costanzo, Lisette Ibraimov and her partner, Cubby Alvarado, and Robert Velez and his fiancé, Amber Amos. He also leaves 15 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren, his siblings: Pedro Velez, Milagros Velez, Edwin Velez, several nieces and nephews and extended family and friends. Nelson was predeceased by his children; Alan and Daniel and his siblings, Hiriam, Hipolito Jr and Neraida Velez

Funeral services for Mr. Velez will be held on Tuesday, March 5, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at Casey’s Eastside Memorial Funeral Home and Cremation Care, 1987 East Main St., Waterbury. Burial will follow in New Pine Grove Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to visit with the Velez family on Monday evening from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
