WATERBURY, CT - Mr. Paul Ernest Pitts Sr. of Waterbury, CT passed away peacefully at his summer home in South Hero, Vermont on August 17, 2016. He was surrounded by the love and care of his family and his devoted wife, Stella (Homick) Pitts and passed after an extended illness.
Paul was born December 19, 1925 in Rutland, VT. He was the son of the late Ernest M. and Alice (Wilkins) York Pitts. He was a graduate of Rutland High School and the University of Vermont. Following his first year in college, he voluntarily joined the U.S. Navy and proudly served his country during World War II as an Electronics Technician Mate Second Class. He returned to UVM and completed his studies graduating with a BS degree in Electrical Engineering. After college, in 1952, he moved to Waterbury and joined IBM in Connecticut where he worked for 37 years as a Computer Service Engineer and retired in May of 1989. He married Stella Homick in October of 1953.
Paul was a car enthusiast and mechanic at heart. After retirement, he took over the family business, Advanced Tire Service in Waterbury, and worked with his oldest son Gordon up until he was 85 years old. He enjoyed problem solving, political discussions and the comradery that came along with running a repair shop. Paul would often say "that you could tell a lot about a person by the way he treats an animal". He himself was a dog lover who showed great affection for all of his pets over the years. He also enjoyed boating, hunting and fishing. He was a true Vermonter and enjoyed the beauty of the lake and the mountains. Paul would often say, as he looked out across the lake, "You're just a little closer to Heaven up here."
Besides his loving wife Stella of 63 years, Paul is survived by his children; his sons Gordon Pitts and his wife Patricia of Waterbury, his son, Paul Pitts and his wife, Cynthia of Killingworth CT, his daughter, Jodi Zienowicz and her husband, Henry of Budd Lake NJ and his eight (8) grandchildren - Dan, Adam, Jackson, Hunter, Brooke, Cooper, Ethan, Cole and a great grandson, Alexavier as well as his beloved dog Freckles. He was predeceased by his parents, his stepmother, Katherine Broccerli Pitts, his sister,Marjorie Plumley and his half-brothers; Edward and Russel York.
Funeral services for Mr. Pitts will be held on Thursday 8/25 at 10:00 a.m. ay Casey's Eastside Memorial Funeral Home 1987 East Main St @ Southmayd Rd Waterbury Burial with full military honors will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Relatives and friends may visit with Paul's family on Wednesday 8/24 from 5:00 till 7:00 p.m. To honor Paul's memory, donations to The Harold Leever Regional Cancer Center
