AT THE CASEY-O'DONNELL FAMILY FUNERAL HOME WATERBURY
Peter Edward Garrity Jr., age 88, of Waterbury, died Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at the Vitas Innovative Care Unit of St. Mary's Hospital with his son and close friends at his side. He was the widower of Mary Rose (Delaney) Garrity, who passed away just 6 weeks ago but had enjoyed 54 years together with her husband.

Peter was born in Pittsfield MA on March 20, 1924 the son of the late Peter E. Garrity Sr and Ellen (Seery) Garrity. Peter and his family moved to the Waterville section of Waterbury when he was 9 years old. He attended Wilby High School and left prior to graduation to serve his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He achieved the rank of Boatswain's Mate 2nd Class and was a decorated veteran receiving several commendations and ribbons for his service in the Pacific. Following the war he returned to Waterbury, completed his education and worked at Chase Brass and Copper as a Millwright for almost 30 years. Later he worked at the New Departure Plant of General Motors in Bristol. Peter was an accomplished athlete during high school in both football and baseball and played semi-pro baseball around the state as a young man. Later in life, he became an avid golfer and duck pin bowler. He bowled in many leagues around Waterbury and enjoyed the game into his 80's. He learned to play golf at the Chase Country Club (now Farmingbury Hills). Once Chase CC closed, he became a member at East Mountain Golf Course where he played for decades. Following his retirement, a warm day would not go by without "Pete" as he was affectionately known, being seen at "The Mountain".

Peter grew up in humble surroundings during the Great Depression where his mother taught him proper life values. He was a kind, giving man, with a great sense of humor and he was always looking out for the underdog. He loved his wife and family, especially his grandchildren, his beloved Red Sox, the Lady Huskies and "The Mountain". He was a longtime parishioner of St. Francis Xavier Church.

Peter is survived by his son, Mark P. Garrity and his wife Kathy of Annapolis MD and his two beloved grandchildren, Michael "Gus" Garrity and Mary Kate Garrity. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Tom and Charlie and three sisters, Eleanor, Pauline and Mary. He also leaves several nieces and nephews.
