Peter Sofia

Peter was born January 8, 1922 in Waterbury, CT, the son of the late Joseph and Grace (Famigletti) Sofia. He was educated in local schools and proudly served his country with the United States Army during World War II. Peter spent many years working as a heavy equipment operator for Fisher Construction and continued working after retirement as a mechanic for Mercury Fuel.

Peter had a huge, loving heart and a warm, inviting smile. His generosity and selflessness combined to make him a truly loving and gentle man. He was loved by all who came in contact with him. He was always willing to help others and had the ability to fix just about anything. He was never without a funny remark of poetry or witty comment.

Over the years, Peter enjoyed family gatherings, polka dancing, music, bowling, old movies, gardening, and reminiscing about old friends. Peter was a former member of Saint Patrick's Church and the Men's Guild.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughters; Carol Gagnon and her husband, Richard of Waterbury, Nancy Shaknaitis and her husband, David of East Hampton; his sister, Carmella Caruso of Waterbury and his sister-in-law Shirley Sofia of Waterbury. He also leaves his three grandchildren; Steven, Paula, and Jennifer in addition to his great grandchildren; Nate, Ryan, Alyssa, and Adam. He was predeceased by his siblings, Anna, Angeline, Michael, Anthony, and Paul as well as his granddaughter, Gail Shaknaitis.
The family wishes to thank all the professionals whose compassionate care made Peter's final journey a peaceful one.

Funeral services for Mr. Sofia will be held privately and at the convenience of his family. There are no calling hours. Casey's Eastside Memorial Funeral Home , 1987 East Main St @ Southmayd Rd Waterbury has been entrusted to assist the family with the arrangements. To honor his memory, contributions in Mr. Sofia's name may be made to Saint Jude's Children Hospital, 501 St Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105.
