REMEMBERING AND HONORING THE LIFE OF RAIMONDO CASAGRANDE

Proud of Italian Heritage

WATERBURY - Raimondo "Ray" A. Casagrande, 89, of Waterbury, passed away peacefully at the Vitas Innovative Care Unit of Saint Mary's Hospital on Thursday, April 28th, 2022, surrounded by the love and comfort of his family after an extended illness.

Ray was born on December 7th, 1932, in Chiavari, Italy, the son of the late Antonio and Alice (Cavagnaro) Casagrande. Ray was raised and educated in Italy and proudly served with the Italian Military, and was a member of the Italian Soccer League, where he played division league soccer. Ray emigrated to the United States in his early 30s, settling in Waterbury, where he was proud to be the owner of several area restaurants, including The Court Lunch, Glady's Kitchen, Greenview Coffee Shop, and Francesca's Luncheon and Catering. After retiring from the restaurant industry in the mid-'90s, Ray began working for the City of Waterbury as a food service manager and school and faculty event coordinator during which time he catered and facilitated all of the city's big events. He also served as a City Constable for many years during this time. He did this until the young age of 82, when he finally decided to retire permanently. Ray loved to cook for his family, especially traditional Italian dishes; he was never one to have idle hands. If he wasn't working, he could always be found around the house, tending to his garden, at the beach, restoring classic Italian cars, and spending time with his grandchildren. Ray was also an avid animal lover and loved to spoil his dogs.

Left to honor his legacy and cherish his memory are his children; Raymond Casagrande Jr and his wife, Jennifer of Newtown, CT, Francesca Corona, and her husband, Sebastian of Naugatuck, and his former wife, Donna Hickey and her husband, Wayne of Winsted and their son, Jason. Ray was blessed with six grandchildren who he loved to spend time with and mentor; Stephen, Matthew, Alex, Eric, Evan, and Rachel, as well as his great-grandson Jack. Ray also leaves behind his nephews, Antony Casagrande and Albert Cantito and their families. He leaves behind his sister, Gaby Rossi of Italy and is preceded in death by his brother Joseph Casagrande, his sisters Gladys Cantito and Esther Casagrande.

A Memorial Service for Mr. Casagrande will be held on Saturday, May 28, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at Casey's Eastside Memorial Funeral Home and Cremation Services 1987 East Main St Waterbury, CT 06705. Relatives and friends may visit with the Casagrande family on Saturday morning from 8:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will follow the ceremony.
