CHESHIRE - The Reverend James B. Gunnoud, age 81, of Southington, formerly of Naugatuck, CT, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 24, 2014, at the Southington Care Center after an extended illness.
Father Gunnoud was born November 7, 1932, in Waterbury, the son of the late Thomas and Hazel (Gallagher) Gunnoud. He graduated from Sacred Heart High School, Providence College and Christ the King Seminary, St. Bonaventure, NY. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 7, 1959 by the Most Reverend John F. Hackett. His first assignment as a priest of the Archdiocese of Hartford was in Saint Bernard Church in Sharon followed by assignments at Saint Mary in Meriden, Our Lady of Victory, West Haven and then as Chaplain at Yale - New Haven Hospital. In 1977, he was assigned to Saint Francis Xavier Church in Waterbury as Pastor and remained there until 1987 when he went to Saint Jude Church in Derby. His last and final assignment was at Saint Bridget Church in Cheshire in 1990 until his retirement in 2006. While at Saint Bridget's he was credited with re-opening the Saint Bridget School and helping to guide it to the vibrant center of learning it has become. Father Gunnoud was especially dedicated to the youth of his parishes. He will always be remembered for his unique sense of humor, his dedication to his vocation and his gregarious outgoing personality.
Among his survivors are his two sisters-in-law, Eloise Gunnoud of Southbury and Patricia Gunnoud of Watertown and his nine nieces and nephews; Thomas , Robert, John, David, Martin, Pamela, James, Christopher and Timothy. Father will also be missed by his friend and colleague, Sr. Lucy Scata, CSJ, who worked with him for over 35 years. Father was predeceased by his sister, Dorothy and brothers, Thomas and John Gunnoud.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Father Gunnoud will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Bridget Church, 174 Main St, Cheshire, CT, with the Most Reverend Leonard P. Blair, Archbishop of Hartford, as the principal celebrant. Burial will follow in Saint James Cemetery, Naugatuck. Friends and relatives may visit with Father's family on Saturday morning at Saint Bridget Church from 10:00 until 10:45 a.m. or on Friday afternoon from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. at Eastside Memorial, "A Casey Family Funeral Home & Tribute Center" 1987 East Main St,.
