Pastor, St Mary Magdalen Parish

OAKVILLE CT - Reverend Thomas William Hickey, Pastor of St. Mary Magdalen Parish, passed away unexpectedly in his rectory residence on Friday, March 13, 2020.

Father Tom was born July 25, 1949 in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, the son of the late William and Mary (Miller) Hickey. He completed theological training at Western Theological Seminary in Portland, Oregon, and spent over twenty-five years of his life as a Baptist minister. He was received into full communion with the Catholic Church in 2002, and a few years later began studies to become a priest of the Archdiocese of Hartford at Holy Apostles Seminary in Cromwell, Connecticut. He was ordained to the priesthood by the Most Reverend Henry J. Mansell at the Cathedral of Saint Joseph in Hartford on May 15, 2010. Fr. Hickey's first assignment was as Parochial Vicar for St. Paul Church and St. Augustine Church in Glastonbury. In addition to part-time work teaching Scripture at Holy Apostles Seminary and his contribution on bodies like the Presbyteral Council, Fr. Hickey would later serve as Administrator and then Pastor of St. Stephen Church in Hamden (which would later become part of Divine Mercy Parish), Senior Parochial Vicar of Sacred Heart Parish in Suffield, and finally, Pastor of St. Mary Magdalen Parish in Oakville.

Father was blessed with his vocation much later in life. This provided him unique gifts in dealing with the many needs of his flock. He was amazingly attentive, always accommodating and willing to listen and bring his life experiences to so many. His reverence was second only to his desire to share the word of God to as many as he could. His most recent trip was with a group of medical experts to Uganda where he found a population with a starving need for faith and he was just the person to share it with them. He was a student of religion, was devoted to reciting the rosary and enjoyed celebrating Mass daily and the Latin Mass monthly at the Basilica. Just recently, Father Tom distributed rosaries to every student at St. Mary Magdalen School. Father Tom spent as much time as he could with the youth and was proud of his successful school. Undoubtedly, if you saw a picture of Father Tom anywhere it was with children. He was not shy, enjoyed a good laugh and had his own, engaging sense of humor. His tireless commitment to his vocation, faith and parish faith community was matched only by his dedication to his own family.

Left to cherish his memory and honor his love and legacy are his three daughters; Allison Johnston and her husband, Jeff of Charlotte, NC, Rebekah Alpert and her husband, Mackenzie of Charlotte, NC and Charissa Hickey of Gainesville FL, his brothers, James and Michael Hickey and the mother of his children, Laura Bray. Father was blessed with 5 grandchildren; Adrianna, Brady, Jacob, Avery and Josh and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Father Hickey will be held on Friday, March 20, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary Magdalen Church when a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Most Rev. Leonard Blair, Archbishop of Hartford as Principal Celebrant. Burial will be in Father Tom's family cemetery plot in Daytona Beach FL. Parishioners, friends and relatives may visit with Father Tom's family on Friday morning from 9:30 till 10:45 a.m. in the church. To honor Father Tom's memory, donations in his name may be made to St. Mary Magdalen Church 145 Buckingham St Oakville CT 06779. The O'Neill Funeral Home 742 Main St Oakville has been honored to assist Father's family and the Archdiocese with arrangements. Memories endure only if you share them, so you are encouraged to leave a condolence, words of comfort or a personal memory with the Hickey family on Father Tom's tribute page at www.oneillfuneralhome.com .
