Active local Realtor & Instructor
WATERBURY– Richard “Dick” Gumpert Sr., age 79 of Waterbury, passed away on Wednesday, January 24, 2024, after a long illness, and is now at peace.
Richard was born on June 24, 1944, in Brooklyn, NY, the son of the late Janet “Tracy” (Viscardi) Kimpel. He graduated from Crosby High School and proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy for 4 years. Following an honorable discharge, Richard earned an associate’s degree from Mattatuck Community College and a bachelor’s degree from Central Connecticut State University, graduating both institutions with honors in business. As a trained Navy electronics technician, he also designed circuit boards for Superior Electric before embarking on a career in real estate. He was an ambitious entrepreneur, owning both City Realty and Richard Gumpert Properties Ltd. Richard also taught Real Estate Principles and Practices courses at local colleges, served consecutive terms as president of the Greater Waterbury Board of Realtors, chaired the GWBR Committee for Equal Opportunity in Housing, and helped design and administer Partners in Education, an outreach program in Waterbury schools.
Richard was the kind of man who could fix anything. A true craftsman, he put pride and artistry into any kind of work, from installing electrical wiring to designing the family’s Christmas displays to building his son a workbench, as well as countless other projects of love over the years. A true old-school gentleman with a dry, subtle wit, he was always available to lend a hand to anyone who needed help. He also enjoyed gardening, playing tennis, and long rides on his motorcycle. But what Richard loved the most was spending time with his family. He will be sadly missed by all who were blessed to know and love him.
Left to cherish his memory and honor his legacy are his life partner of 22 years, Patricia Collin of Bristol; his two loving sons, Richard Gumpert Jr. and his wife Theresa of Cheshire; and Jesse Gumpert and his wife Mariah of Terryville. He also leaves his grandchildren, Richard III, Paige, Joy, and Jacqueline; his sister, Janet Ritucci and her husband Richard of Middlebury; and his brother, David Creger of North Carolina, along with extended family, including Pat’s family and friends. His family is also grateful to the compassionate staff at the Pines at Bristol for their exceptional care.
A Memorial Service for Richard will be held on Monday, February 12, 2024 at 12:00 p.m. at Casey’s Funeral Home and Cremation Care, 1987 East Main Street, Waterbury. Relatives and friends may visit with Richard’s family from 10:00 a.m. until the service commences at 12:00 p.m. Burial will be held privately at the convenience of the family.
