WATERBURY - Richard H. Watterworth, beloved father, brother, teacher and coach, died peacefully on January 18, 2013 at Waterbury Hospital surrounded by his daughters.

Richard was born February 19, 1935 in Waterbury Connecticut, son of the late Harold and Emma (Herr) Watterworth He graduated from Wilby High School in 1953 and proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. When he returned from his service, he went on to earn a Bachelor of Science from Quinnipiac University, a Master's of Education from Central Connecticut State University, and a sixth-year teaching certificate from Fairfield University. Richard was a dedicated teacher in the Waterbury school system for 34 years where he taught business education at John F. Kennedy High School, Mattatuck Community College, and Post University until his retirement.

An avid sportsman, Richard coached football, basketball, baseball and track at John F. Kennedy High School. He was a professional referee in basketball and football throughout the state of Connecticut. He was an outstanding and well recognized athlete and a member of Wilby High School's championship basketball team of1953 that played at the Boston Garden.

He was a passionate fisherman and a long standing member of the Waterbury Deep Sea Fishing Club, he loved the outdoors and being in nature, enjoyed gardening, and found great joy in woodworking. He lived for several years in Old Orchard Beach, Maine where he found peace on the ocean and taking his boat "Dad's Four A's" out from Booth Bay Harbor.

Richard is survived by his four daughters; Dayna Watterworth and her husband John of Ansonia, Melissa Batt and her husband Steve of Storrs, Monica Watterworth and husband Rusty and their children Sophia and Jamison of Northfield, Krista Alterman and her husband Eric and their children Griffon and Skylar of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, his former wife Iona and her husband Frank Valentino of Waterbury, and his faithful dog "Patches". One brother, Donald L. Watterworth and his wife Patricia of Middlebury, sisters Carol Perugini of Waterbury, Virginia Wagner (husband Doug) of Norridgewock, Maine, Winifred Saginario of Bethlehem, CT, Kristine Watterworth of Preston, CT, Corinne Watterworth of Southington, CT, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Harold "Joe" Watterworth. The family would like to thank the staff at Glendale Center of Naugatuck, CT and especially his care giver of many years Maria Moura and her daughter Kathy.

Funeral services with full military honors for Mr. Watterworth will be held on Monday, January 21, 2013 at 10:00 am from EASTSIDE MEMORIAL " A Casey Family Funeral Home & Tribute Center" 1987 East Main St @ Southmayd Rd Waterbury to SS Peter & Paul Church 67 Southmayd Rd to celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30am. Rites of Committal will follow in New Pine Grove Cemetery, Waterbury. Family & friends may visit at the funeral home on Sunday afternoon from 4 till 7pm.
