Richmond Alden Hornby, Sr

Richmond Alden Hornby, Sr., 86, formerly of Waterbury, passed away peacefully at the Rocky Hill Veterans' Home on Saturday, March 14, 2015 after an extended illness.

Richmond "Dick" Hornby, Sr. was born August 5, 1928 in Attleboro, Massachusetts , the son of the late Arthur and Ann (Rex) Hornby. He was a graduate of East High School in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, attended Bryant College and graduated from Post University with a Bachelor's Degree in 1996. A World War II Navy Veteran attached to the Victory American Theatre, Richmond led a most colorful life. His Navy enlistment and powerful pitching arm led him to Minor League baseball in the Coastal Plain and North Atlantic Leagues in the early 1950's. A Red Sox fan, Richmond was most proud of playing a Rhode Island All-Stars game in Fenway Park. Along with these accomplishments, Richmond was an active member of a machinists' union in Beacon Falls for several years. Mr. Hornby's family would like to thank all of the Rocky Hill VA staff, especially those of B Lower-Level, for their amazing love and care over the years.

A friend of Bill W. for over fifty years, Richmond was very proud of his work with friends, peers and colleagues in helping others as a drug and alcohol counselor. He was pre-deceased by his daughter, Cindy Hornby and longtime girlfriend, Ellen Kilbride. He is survived by his daughters, Joy Ann Kelsey and Betsy LaPaglia and sons, Richmond Hornby, Jr and Arthur Hornby. His sister Alison Fijman. He also leaves behind his grandchildren: Rich Hornby, Christine Hornby, Kendra Hornby, Alison Grover, Brandon Hornby, Dylan Hornby, Grace Hornby, Marin and Maeve Kelsey. He also leaves behind four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mr. Hornby will be held on Wednesday, March 18, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at Eastside Memorial "A CASEY FAMILY FUNERAL HOME AND TRIBUTE CENTER", 1987 East Main St. @ Southmayd Rd Waterbury CT. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery Pawcatuck RI. Friends and relatives may visit with Richmond's family on Tuesday evening from 5:00 till 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
