THE CASEY FAMILY IS HONORED TO BE ASSISTING AND CARING FOR THE FAMILY OF RITA COPPOLA
Waterbury- Rita G. Coppola, age 93 of Waterbury, Connecticut, passed away peacefully
on Saturday evening, December 28, 2019 with loving family by her side at Saint Mary's Hospital.
Her health declined rapidly as her physical heart began to fail, but her emotional heart
was strong to the end. She will continue to be with us in spirit for the rest of our lives.
Rita was born in Amalfi, Italy on January 15, 1926 and lived there
throughout WWII when times were hard and danger was imminent. She
grew strong and resourceful while deepening her values of what is most
important in life such as simple living within your means, sacrificing your
own needs for the sake of others, and inspiring goodness in and love for
everyone.
She married Alphonse Coppola in Pompei, near Amalfi, in 1956. After their
wedding and honeymoon, Alphonse returned to the US while Rita waited in
Amalfi for her immigration clearance. In 1958, Rita finally arrived in the US
and was reunited with Alphonse. She and their first child arrived in New
York City by Italian ocean liner, SS Cristoforo Columbo. They settled in
Waterbury, Connecticut to live close to family including Alphonse's mother,
brother, sister, in-laws, nieces, and nephews. Rita faced many difficult
challenges adapting to her new life in America, but she was able to thrive
with the loving support of her new extended family.
She raised three children while cooking and cleaning at home, teaching
herself English, learning to drive, and working the second shift at a nearby
factory to be home with her young children during the day. She retired from
Mattatuck Manufacturing Company in Waterbury after 30 years of full-time
employment.
She was a hardworking, dedicated mother and wife who provided well for
her family. In the midst of the hustle and bustle of day to day life, she filled
our home with the sounds of her hearty laughter and her beautiful singing.
One of her strongest qualities was her courage. She had the courage to
take on whatever needed to be done and to fully express herself to anyone
providing the tough love that we all need from time to time.
Sunday afternoons weren't complete without her home cooked
tomato sauce, meatballs, and potato pie with classic Neapolitan music
playing in the background. And, when all else fails she would provide plenty
of "salt water" or "lemon juice with baking soda" for your aliments. LOL! Her
go-to remedies! She was truly a great woman that will be missed by all of
us!!
She is preceded in death by her spouse, Alphonse Coppola, her brothers,
Andrea Galoppi and Stefano Galoppi, and her sister, Giuseppina Tolu, and
survived by her sister, Maria De Muto of Rome, Italy, sister-in law, Ida
Galoppi of Rome, Italy, daughters, Anna Coppola and husband, Leigh
Sneddon of Mill Valley, California, Mary Dance and husband, Albert Dance of Southington, Connecticut; son, Andrew P. Coppola and wife Sandra Sullivan of Wolcott, Connecticut; and grandchildren, Albert Dance III and
wife Courtney Dance, Samantha Alleva and husband Justin Alleva, Andrew Coppola Jr., Charlie Dance, and Colin Sneddon.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Coppola will be held on Friday January 3, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. from Casey's Eastside Memorial Funeral Home 1987 East Main St @ Southmayd Rd Waterbury, CT 06705, to Mary, Mother of the Church Parish - SS. Peter and Paul Church, 67 Southmayd Road, Waterbury to celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Relatives and friends may visit with Rita's family at the funeral home on Friday morning from 9:30 a.m. until it is time to leave for Mass.
