Beloved Wife, Mom, Grammy, Nurse
OAKVILLE - Rita Marie (Shea) Kogut
On the beautiful, snowy morning of Dec. 17th, Rita, our beloved Mom and Grammy, passed away peacefully at her home, with her family at her bedside.
Married to Joseph H. Kogut of Oakville, they would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this March.Rita was born on Feb. 24, 1934 and was predeceased by her parents, James F. and Mary T. Shea, her brother, John Shea and an infant daughter, Linda Ann.
Rita had wonderful memories of her childhood, growing up in the Hill St. neighborhood of Waterbury and maintained lifelong friendships. Attending St. Thomas School and graduating from Waterbury Catholic High School, Rita postponed her dream of becoming a nurse until her children were of school age.
Completing the Practical Nurse Education Program in 1973, Rita lovingly cared for her St. Mary's Hospital O'Brien 4 patients for a decade, and later, compassionately cared for many Hospice patients through her work at the Waterbury VNA.
Most of all, Rita enjoyed being an active part of her three grandchildrens lives. Always generous with her time and love, Grammy was the number one fan of Jake, Kylee and Joshua Sklanka. Always the first to arrive to each and every Watertown school event, every soccer, football or basketball game, swimming or track meets, she loved to cheer on and support her grandchildren and their teammates. She was such fun and it was she who was the very best!
Besides her husband, Rita leaves behind her daughter, Mary Sklanka and husband, John,of Breckenridge, CO, a son, Joseph P. Kogut and his girlfriend, Tara Barr, of East Hartford and daughter, Amy Kogut of Port Orange, FL and her fiancé, John Vitkauskas. She also leaves several cousins here and in Ireland, and several nieces and nephews.A special thank you to Kathy Carrillo and also to the VITAS at Home staff for their compassionate care.
Funeral services for Mrs. Kogut will be held on Wednesday, December 21, 2016 at 10:00 am from O'Neill Funeral Home, 742 Main St Oakville CT, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in Saint John the Evangelist Church, 574 Main Street Watertown, at 10:30am.
