WATERBURY - Mr. Robert "Bob" Shambreskis, age 92 of Waterbury, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 25, 2016 at St. Mary's Hospital after a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of Helen (Romanuk) Shambreskis.
Bob was born in Waterbury, CT on June 13, 1924 the son of the late Frank and Mary (Minic) Shambreskis. He graduated from St. Joseph's Grammar School, Crosby High School. Arnold College and Post College where he excelled as an athlete. He proudly served his country during World War II in the South Pacific as a Staff Sergeant. Bob was a letter carrier for the US Post Office for over 35 years before his retirement. He was an outstanding local athlete, especially in baseball where he played in the Waterbury Amateur League as a Pitcher and 3rd baseman. He was invited to tryout for the New York Yankees and had the thrill of a lifetime, hitting a home run at Wrigley Field in Chicago during one of his AllStar games. But Bob's real passion was sharing his love of the game with area kids. He was a true mentor to so many who shared his love of baseball. He was a co-founder of the East Mountain Baseball Tigers and Giants and Coached area youth for decades. He also taught adult athletes in the Twi-met league in Waterbury. Bob also had a passion for cooking and he was a member of the Oakville VFW Post 7330. He was a parishioner of SS Peter & Paul Church.
Besides his loving wife of 69 years, Bob is survived by his sons, Robert and his wife Denise of Watertown, Paul of San Jose CA and Peter and his wife, Corrinne of Fountain Hills AZ, his two grandchildren, Kimberly Kelly and Denise Keene and several nieces and nephews, especially Barbara and Joseph Patrick.
Funeral services for Mr. Shambreskis will be held on Friday, October 28, 2016 at 10:30 am from Casey's Eastside Memorial Funeral Home 1987 East Main St Waterbury to SS Peter & Paul Church 67 Southmayd Rd where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Mt Olivet Cemetery, Watertown. Relatives and friends may visit with Bob's family on Friday morning from 9:30 till 10:30 am at the funeral home. To honor Bob's memory, donations can be made to East Mountain Athletic Association.
