AT THE O'NEILL FUNERAL HOME - OAKVILLE - Roberta "Bobbie" (Byrnes) Czarsty age 81 of Hillside Avenue died Sunday, September 20, 2009, surrounded by her family at the home of Lisa Greenwood, her former daughter-in-law. She was the wife of the late Joseph C. Czarsty, M.D.
Bobbie was born in Waterbury on July 4, 1928, daughter of the late W. Harry and Mary (O'Connor) Byrnes. She attended Sacred Heart Grammar and High Schools. She graduated from the Willimantic State Teacher's College (now Eastern Connecticut State University). She was a teacher at the John Marshall Elementary School in Arlington, Virginia, while her husband was in medical school. Upon his graduation, they returned to Connecticut and lived in Oakville for the rest of their lives.
Bobbie was very active in a variety of charities and foundations as well as supporting her husband's work in organized medicine. She was President of the Waterbury Hospital Auxiliary and one of its first life members. She was a former incorporator of the Hospital and was involved with many of its committees and fund raising activities. She originated the Auxiliary's annual Christmas greeting in the Waterbury Republican. She was the President of the Auxiliaries of the Waterbury Medical Association, New Haven County, Litchfield County and Connecticut State Medical Societies. She was the Eastern Regional Representative to the Board of Directors of the Auxiliary of the American Medical Association. For many years, she was the Editor of the Connecticut State Medical Society Auxiliary's newspaper. She and her husband started a scholarship fund at the Connecticut Academy of Family Physicians to support medical students interested in Family Medicine. The fund was later named after them.
Bobbie was a long time member of the Watertown Foundation and chaired its Scholarship Committee. She was on the Board of the Watertown Library Association and was a Vice President. She was also on the Board of Directors of the Clockwork Repertory Theater in Oakville. She was a life long communicant of St. Mary Magdalen Church.
She is survived by a son, Craig W. Czarsty, M.D. and his wife, Margaret, of Watertown and their children, Mary Frances and Elizabeth; a son, Curt S. Czarsty and his wife Ashley, of Chandler, Arizona and their son, Kyle; a daughter, Kyle Kinzly and her husband, Brad, of Watertown and their children, Brandon and Connor; a son, Keith Czarsty of Oakville.
There will be a memorial mass at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, September 26, at St. Mary Magdalen Church in Oakville. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
