Southbury - Mr. Roland F. Largay, age 88, of Southbury, passed away on Monday May 13, 2013 at his home surrounded by his loving family after a brief illness and a remarkable and joyful life.
Roland was born in Hudson, NY July 5th 1924, the son of the late George and Elizabeth (O'Brien) Largay. He was a graduate of Crosby High School and attended Holy Cross College for two years before proudly serving in the US Navy as a Ensign during WWII. He graduated from Yale University in 1948, worked as a Sales Manager at Anchor Fasteners, and then founded Largay Travel in 1969.
He personally traveled to a host of exotic destinations and experienced many diverse cultures. His favorite destination was Africa, which he visited (26) times, as he loved the wildlife and embraced the people. He was especially proud of the company's slogan, "Please Go Away!' which he created.
He was as founding member and Chairman of the Board for Virtuoso Travel Group. He was featured numerous times by Conde Nast Magazine as " One of the World's Top Travel Advisers" and received the 'Luxury Travel Agent of the Year.' award. He was known worldwide as the "Ambassador of Joy", and was a renowned prestidigitator (magician) always anxious to perform for the next available, and often times, unsuspecting audience.
The Family would like to acknowledge and thank Roland's caregiver, Tim Adams, for all the love and care that he provided. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to Americashare at 15 West 26th St New York, NY 10010. This organization provides precious educational opportunities for Kenya orphans.
Funeral Services for Mr. Largay will be held on Saturday May 18th 2013 with the celebration of a Mass of Christian Burial to be held at Saint Teresa of Avila church 494 Main St South Woodbury, CT 06798 at 8:30 am. Those planning on attending are asked to meet directly at the church. Committal services with full military honors will follow in Mt Olivet Cemetery in Watertown. There are no calling hours.
