AT THE CASEY-O'DONNELL FAMILY FUNERAL HOME
Waterbury -Russell H. Kelley age 88, of Atwood Ave. Waterbury, went home to join
Jesus on August 27th, at Gaylord Hospital in Wallingford surrounded by his loving family.
Russell was born September 22nd 1922 in Orient, Maine, the son of the late Ora and Opal (Daggett) Kelley. He was raised on the family farm and later moved to Meriden, CT as a teenager and graduated from Meriden High School. He worked at New Departure as a millwright until his retirement after 34 years. He moved to Waterbury about 1993.
Russell was very proud of his service during WWII. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in December, 1942 earning five battle stars while serving as a gunners mate aboard the Destroyer Escort USS Fair (DE-35) in the Asiatic-Pacific campaigns. Russell manned a 20MM anti-aircraft gun and helped battle kamikazes off Saipan and Okinawa. He was honorably discharged in December, of 1948
Russell was born again as a Christian in September 1950 and was a long-time Christian pastor who continually worshiped and praised God. He had the calling of an evangelist and was an elder at Riverbank Christian Worship Center in Waterbury at the time of his death. He had a zest for life and was a mighty prayer warrior who spent hours each day praying for people's needs and for their salvation. He was a gentle man who spoke words of wisdom and righteousness to all that God sent to him. He was a man of grace, strength and love.
Russell was a loving husband to his wife Millie (McNellis) Kelley for 14 years, a father and faithful friend. Besides his wife, he is survived by two children from a previous marriage; his son Gregory Kelley and his daughter LoRayne Evans both of Portland Oregon, seven step stepsons who loved and honored him, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The family would like to express our most grateful and sincere appreciation to the Casey-O'Donnell Family Funeral Home for the professional, caring and compassionate services they provided, not just for Russell, but for all of our family throughout the years.
A private graveside service, with full military honors was held at Walnut Grove Cemetery in Meriden on August 31st.
