AT THE O'NEILL FUNERAL HOME- Shirley Royce Ayers age 87 of Gilbert Road, formerly of Norwalk died Monday October 20, 2008 at Waterbury Extended Care.

Shirley was born February 2, 1921 in Norwalk, a daughter of the late Emerson C. and Maude (Wilson) Ayers and lived in Norwalk most of her life, moving to Watertown in 1999. She was a graduate of Norwalk Hospital School of Nursing, earned her Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from the University of Bridgeport and her Master's Degree in Nursing from Columbia University in NY. Prior to her retirement in 1999, she was employed as a nurse and administrator at Greenwich Hospital where she was also instrumental in the formation of Home Health Care in the United States. She had also worked as the head of the emergency department and night supervisor at Norwalk Hospital for many years. Shirley was a member of the Quota Club, Quota members are known for their service to the deaf, the hearing and speech impaired, and disadvantaged women and children. She was an active member of the East Ave. Methodist Church in Norwalk and an active member of the Norwalk Senior Center.

She leaves a sister Arlene MacMillan, two nephews Craig MacMillan and his wife Mary Ellen, Todd MacMillan and his wife Colleen and a neice Kyle Dellario and her husband Charles.

Graveside services for Shirley will be held in Riverside Cemetery in Norwalk at a date and time to be announced. There are no calling hours.
