WATERBURY - Shirley F. Burr age 95 of Waterbury and Madison, CT passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday May 28th 2017 after a brief illness.
Shirley was born August 19, 1921 in Waterbury, CT. Daughter of the late William J. and Helen A. (O'Brien) Forgue, she graduated from Crosby High School and attended Post College. Shirley worked for Colonial Bank and Bank of Boston for 30 years before retirement where she was one of the first female bank Vice Presidents. She was a Certificate Member of the American Institute of Banking and spent much of her career in the East End and Naugatuck Valley Mall Banking offices. She served for many years as the treasurer for the Naugatuck Valley Mall merchants association. Following retirement from Banking, Shirley received her real estate property appraisal license and continued to work for several years.
Shirley was a well-known and active member of the Waterbury community. She served the Waterbury Chamber of Commerce and was on the Board of Directors of Junior Achievement and Catholic Family Services. She was an involved member of AARP, the National Association of Bank Women, and the Ancient Order of Hibernians where she held several leadership positions and was the Grand Marshall of the 2009 Saint Patrick's Day Parade. Shirley spent summers in Madison, CT for the past 29 years and was a long-time communicant of the Lady of Loretto Church.
In addition to community service interests, Shirley greatly enjoyed time with family and friends whose lives were enriched by her warm and caring demeanor. She had a special independent spirit and "can do" attitude that drove her to generously organize countless outings, trips, vacations, and adventures for grandkids, nieces, nephews, and her wide network of friends. Shirley loved all animals and rescued several dogs and cats over her lifetime.
Shirley is survived by her daughter Cassandra E. Nikituk and son-in-law Stephen A. Nikituk of Madison, CT. Grandson Dr. Kevin J. Croce and his wife Dr. Kathryn L. Gorski of Dedham, MA. Step Granddaughter Kim Gifford, and Step Grandson Stephen Nikituk Jr. Great grandchildren Cameron and Owen Croce, and Michael and Peter Gifford, and many beloved nieces and nephews. Shirley is additionally survived by her niece Kathleen Pashko, nephew Rev. James F. Leary, and dear friends Mary Ann Flaherty, Barbara Anton, and Paula Angelo. She was pre-deceased by her sister Madelyn R. McCormack. She also leaves her cat Izabella, who will be well cared for and loved.
Funeral services for Mrs. Burr will be held on Friday June 2nd at 10:00 a.m. when a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Loreto Church in Waterbury CT. Burial will follow in Mt Olivet Cemetery, Watertown. Those planning to attend are kindly asked to meet directly at the church.
