THOMASTON- Shirley Marian (Veilleux aka Viger) O'Connell, age 86, of Thomaston passed away Sunday April 27, 2014 at Waterbury Hospital in the caring presence of her daughter and son. She was the widow of Robert L. O'Connell.
Mrs. O'Connell was born June 7, 1927 in Waterbury a daughter of the late Henry and Yvonne (Greenwood/Boisvert) Viger. She was brought up in Oakville and attended South (Griffin) School and Watertown High School. She was employed as an information operator at SNET for many years. After raising their children, she and her husband moved to Arizona where she eventually retired from Mountain Bell. After their return to Connecticut, Shirley was employed at Waterbury Hospital and later became a long-time volunteer there, as well as, at the Bargain Shop of Thomaston. She was a communicant of Saint Mary Magdalen Church.
She leaves a son William O'Connell and his wife Betsy of Oakville, a daughter Judith O'Connell of Cheswick, PA., a brother Walter Veilleux and his wife Fran of Green Valley, AZ., a grandson Christopher O'Connell and his wife Cayla, a granddaughter Ann O'Connell and her husband Tom Davis, a great-grandson T.W. Davis, a sister-in-law Kate Veilleux, a former son-in-law David Balchunas, several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 49 years, a son Robert O'Connell Jr., a daughter Kathleen Balchunas and a brother Henry Veilleux.
A graveside service will be held for Mrs. O'Connell on Friday, May 2, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Calvary Cemetery in Waterbury. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the Thomaston Public Library 248 Main Street Thomaston, CT 06787.
