WATERBURY - Sidney F. Gooding Jr. age 86 of Waterbury, died on Saturday, April 12, 2014 at St. Mary's Hospital after a brief illness. He was the husband of Phyllis (Verrastro) (Vitarelli) Gooding.
Sid was born September 20, 1927 in Manhattan NY, the son of the late Sidney F. and Theresa Ribbicke) Gooding. He was raised in the Bronx and studied electronics at the Thomas Edison School in New York City. Sid proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II serving stateside as a member of the military police at Fort Dix NJ. Sid played minor league baseball for several teams and had tryouts with the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants. He moved to Connecticut in 1976 and worked as an electronics technician for Timex Corp. Later he worked for Lewis Corp until his retirement. Sid was an accomplished tenor who sang at many local community theater productions in Fort Meyers FL and the greater Waterbury area including the Palace and Seven Angels Theaters. He was a member of the Waterbury Chorale for many years and also sang with the choirs of several area churches. Most recently, he was the cantor and choir member at Blessed Sacrament Church in Waterbury. Sid was a big sports fan. He enjoyed many fishing outings with his children and grandchildren. He was devoted to his wife Phyllis who he always put first. He was a fun loving man who enjoyed giving others pleasure and touched the lives of everyone he met with laughter and joy.
Besides his devoted wife Phyllis, Sidney leaves his stepsons, Francis Vitarelli and his wife Deborah, Michael Vitarelli and David Vitarelli and his wife Kelly. He also leaves five grandchildren, Lynn Ouellette and her husband Rob, Jessica Vitarelli, Michael Vitarelli and his fiancé Liz Courter, Anthony Vitarelli and Derek Vitarelli and two great grandchildren Joshua and Ethan Ouellette.
Funeral services for Mr. Gooding will be held on Wednesday, April 16, 2014 with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at Blessed Sacrament Church 182 Robbins St Waterbury at 10:00am. Those planning to attend are asked to meet directly at the church. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours.
