AT THE O'NEILL FUNERAL HOME - Mrs. Sophie (Mytych) Handura age 94 of Watertown passed gently from this world on Sunday evening November 28, 2010 with her twin daughters by her side. She was the widow of Joseph E. Handura, her husband of 61 years before his passing in 2001.
Sophie was born December 22, 1915 in Cleveland, Ohio a daughter of the late Walter and Anna (Zavisla) Mytych and moved to Oakville as a child where she was raised by her mother and step father Peter Kolatzki. She was educated in Watertown schools. Sophie was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother and was a proficient seamstress and homemaker who welcomed all to her home. Her favorite hobbies were restoring antique furniture, gardening and caring for her backyard birds. She was a communicant of Saint Mary Magdalen Church and a member of the Catholic Women's Organization.
She leaves her twin daughters Susan Banda of Watertown, Mary Ann Briesbois and her husband Normand and their children Beth, Mark and James, five great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her first born daughter Joanne, her son in law Vinny Banda, three brothers and two sisters.
Funeral Wednesday at 11 a.m. directly at Saint Mary Magdalen Church. Friends and family are asked to meet directly at church. There are no calling hours. The O'Neill Funeral Home, 742 Main Street has been entrusted with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, friends may contribute to Saint Mary Magdalen Church, 16 Buckingham Street, Oakville, CT 06779 or to the Watertown Volunteer Fire Department, 935 Main Street, Watertown, CT 06795.
