OAKVILLE-Thomas Francis Downey, 82, of Oakville died Thursday, December 18, 2008 at Waterbury Extended Care in Watertown. He was the husband of Arline (Duphiney) Downey.
Thomas was born October 24, 1926 in Waterbury, a son of the late John and Bertha (Neubert) Downey and lived in Oakville for the past 55 years. He was a graduate of Crosby High School and Sienna College Class of 1951. Thomas proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps on the U.S.S. Louisville during World War II and completed his service as an honor guard at the United Nations. He was a member of VFW Oakville Post 7330 and served the Town of Watertown as a member of the Planning and Zoning Commission and the Democratic Town Committee for many years. He was employed by Pratt and Whitney Aircraft, Southington Division as a Production Engineer for over 30 years.
Beside his wife of 56 years, he is survived by his daughter, Margaret Downey of Milford, his sons and their wives, James and Mona of Cheshire, Patrick and Kathleen, Matthew and Terri, and Mark and Carolyn of Watertown and Thomas and Cindy Downey of Oakville. He was the proud grandfather of eleven grandchildren, Ryan, Colleen, Jessica, Kevin, Megan, Mariah, Ali, Richard, Lucas, Elizabeth, and Emily. He is survived by his brother, Edward Downey of Framingham, Mass. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Sr. Bernice Marie Downey of The Maryknoll Missions and his brother, Jack Downey of Waterbury.
Funeral Monday 9 a.m. from the O'Neill Funeral Home, 742 Main Street Oakville to the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception for Mass at 10. Burial will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Watertown. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
