AT THE O'NEILL FUNERAL HOME ?" Thomas J. "Sonny" Fernandes, age 71 of Cobb Street died Wednesday at Waterbury Hospital. He was the husband of Audrey (Gantek) Fernandes.

Sonny was born June 30, 1937 in Waterbury, a son of the late Antonio and Carmella (Genova) Fernandes and lived in Waterbury most of his life. He was a graduate of Wilby High School where he also played baseball and basketball. Prior to his retirement in 1999, he was employed as a machinist and supervisor at Napco in Terryville and had worked at the former AMF Alcort in Waterbury for most of his career. He also worked as a crossing guard at Saint John the Evangelist School in Watertown. He was an avid sports fan who played semi pro baseball, was known as the home run king in the Waterbury IRA softball league and earned the nickname "Topcat" or "T.C.". Sonny was well known and appreciated for his special spaghetti sauce, which is served across the country. He proudly served his country in the US Army during the Korean War and was a communicant of Saint John the Evangelist Church in Watertown.

Besides his wife of Oakville, he leaves a son Thomas A. Fernandes and his wife Lisa of Wolcott, a daughter Danette McEvoy and her fiancée Michael Mazzacane of Waterbury, a step son Edward Karwin of Stamford, two sisters Delinda Crisafulle of Lantana, FL., Lucille Correia of Waterbury. He was known as "Papa Fer" to his three grandchildren Emily McEvoy, Gabrielle and Justin Fernandes. He also leaves three step grandchildren Amanda, Christopher and Joseph Karwin, several loving nieces and nephews and his mother in law Wilma Gantek of Oakville. He was predeceased by a brother Anthony Fernandes.

Funeral Saturday 10 a.m. from the O'Neill Funeral Home, 742 Main Street to Saint John the Evangelist Church for Mass at 11. Burial will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Watertown. Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday beginning at 8:30. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1075 Chase Parkway, Waterbury, CT 06708.
