Waterbury - Mr. Thomas F. Kelly, age 86, formerly of Circular Ave., Waterbury, died Friday, January 21,2011 at The Village of East Farms after an extended illness. He was the widower of Eileen (Noonan) Kelly.
Mr. Kelly was born June 4th 1924 in Chicago Illinois, the son the late LeRoy T. Kelly & Margaret (Hesser) Kelly. He was a graduate of Lane Technical Institute in Chicago and attended the University of Notre Dame. He was a member of the 1944 National Championship Water Polo Team and a Golden Glove Midwest Boxer before he joined the US Navy and served aboard the USS Stickleback, Submarine in the South Pacific Campaign During WWII. After the war he was the founder and owner of Kelly Roofing & Construction Company in Waterbury where he built thirty-five homes in the Waterbury area. In his later years, he became an Instructor for the State of CT, Technical School system and taught at Bullard Havens Technical High School in Bridgeport and later Kaynor Tech in Waterbury. Mr. Kelly was an avid sports enthusiast who enjoyed spending time outdoors and on the water, swimming, water skiing, sailing, wind surfing, ice skating or skiing. He also loved kayaking and mountain biking. He was a long time member of Saint Peters and Paul Church in Waterbury.
Among his survivors are his two sons, Tom Kelly and his wife Mary of Waterbury and Jim Kelly and his wife Cheryl of Woodbury, one daughter, Mary Hensley and her husband Bob of Port St. Lucie FL, 10 grandchildren, Kristen, Tom, Michael, Jimmy, Megan, Bobby, Michael, Matthew, Jeffrey and Kelly and one great grandson, Tucker T. Kelly as well as several nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his daughter, Peggy Kelly, his brother LeRoy Kelly and his sister, Sister Regina Marie Kelly.
Funeral services with full military honors will be held on Tuesday, January 25th, 2011 at 10:00am from the Casey-O'Donnell Family Funeral Home, 1581 East Main St Waterbury to SS Peter & Paul Church, 67 Southmayd Rd Waterbury for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30am. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Waterbury. Family and friends may visit at the funeral home on Monday evening from 5 - 7 pm.
